at the last one things got a bit lary after that game where you get a famous person's name stuck to your forehead and you have to guess who you are. These days we pump four litres of gin into you and dump you naked in a layby on the A34, and you have to guess who you actually are. |

What happens after 500? Is it like Logan's Run and we get taken out the back and put put of our misery? At 500, word is you get to be invited "backstage " with the Mods for a special presentation with a couple of glasses of bubbly and some posh nibbles, although from what I've been told it was more like pommagne and pot noodle. I really wanted mine to be at the weekend as I'm allowed to stay up a bit later, but I don't think they're doing it any more: at the last one things got a bit lary after that game where you get a famous person's name stuck to your forehead and you have to guess who you are. A pritt stick was whipped out, photographs taken, a lot of effing and jeffing, and someone (I do know who but I can't say) ended up locked in their dressing room after hanging on to some stage curtains pretending to be Norma Desmond, screaming, "I'll do it again, I'll do it again, I'll do it again..." Putting the Sheridan Smith element aside I saw this the other night with Natasha at the helm. In conclusion, I thought the stage musical Funny Girl is what I have always thought about the film it is just an ok musical in relation to the music & lyrics. Yes it has two iconic songs but if they are removed from the equation the reminder is mediocrity. Which directed me to think about how this musical fared on the stage with Streisand in 1964. In the Tony award in 1964 it was nominated 8 times (nil wins) but was completely over shadowed by Hello Dolly that won 10 awards. Even the goddess Streisand's was out done by Carol Channing in Holly Dolly and that was a surprise.

i wonder what will happen with the planned cast recording now? would the producers still think to do it even if it is later on in the run? i do hope so I'm assuming by the posts that were on Twitter/Instagram a few weeks ago that it is already done, so should be fine. Might be pushed back a little if they need her to do any little fill ins or re-do bits, but should affect too much |

I think her comments about Sheridan Smith's situation are fair...? She sounds concerned more than anything, she's certainly not criticising her. By 'I used to think...but now maybe there's a question mark' she could simply mean that Smith may choose not to return to the stage - which, as she points out, would certainly be a loss for audiences.

If it is her fathers diagnosis that has triggered all of this then she should have sat down with the producers and asked about a leave of absence much earlier instead of kicking off so publicly. She is already in the lucky position of having a job that gives her free time and flexibility during the day to be with her family, far more so than the majority of jobs. Also, being the leading lady is more than just being the star, she is the company leader and there is a responsibility with that. How she has acted has been unfair to the rest of the company. I have worked with people who have had immidate family members go through cancer (some twice) and also had family members myself have cancer and the harsh reality is you can't just give up work unless you are very fortunate. How do you know that she didn't sit down with the producers and try to work things out? How do you know she wasn't urged by her father to carry on with the transfer? How do you know about how much the weight of the fans' expectations has been weighing on her? How do you know she didn't feel honour-bound to soldier on because she didn't want to let her castmates down? I would hazard a guess that you know very little at all. I doubt that many of us will ever carry the burden of having to cope with a family members terminal illness at the same time as being responsible for others employment and enjoyment on such a scale as a West End leading actor is. It's clear that Sheridan Smith isn't coping well but the talk of her ruining her career / letting people down / being a diva / potentially showing she is too risky a proposition for future producers is absolutely ridiculous. As far as I'm aware she has NEVER shown herself to be unprofessional or unpopular with her colleagues previously (granted I don't read the Daily Fail but they deal in prejudice, misogyny, fear-mongering and salacious gossip, so I would take anything they've reported with a huge grain of salt). So I wish her the best, I hope she gets the time she needs to cope with a heartbreaking situation, I hope she comes back stronger than she realises she is capable of at the moment and I hope that people will start to cut her some slack; we all deal with loss in different ways but the thought of doing it in the public eye and with so many (excuse my language) absolute TW@TS passing judgement is not something that many of us would be able to cope with. |
