Sorry to be a bit behind (catching up on a 2 month absence) but am I the only one who has never heard of Katherine Jenkins? Who on earth is she?! Hilarious!

Katherine Jenkins is a singer. People who don't know opera think she sings opera, people who only know opera think she sings pop. She's a crossover artist, legit enough to be played on Classic FM, but not legit enough that people won't tut about it. Her sole foray into acting at this point is a previous Doctor Who special where she spent much of the episode frozen in stasis, then sang to space fish at the big finale. Very pretty, will probably sound nice enough singing the score, but the acting part could prove an issue.

She's Welsh so my nation on the whole worship her flying the flag for the country, and being very beautiful doing it. She also as someone mentioned I think does a lot for the Armed forces-entertaining and raising money etc.
I had almost forgotten that Dr Who Special, where she came off as very lovely and pretty but it was not exactly the kind of role to show great acting regardless. Anyway who knows she may be utterly made for this role and shine.

My my she does seem to be entirely made of marmite.
In her defence the only comment below suggests that she doesn’t claim to be an Opera singer, but that didn’t stop someone compiling this…
(Sorry Katherine, next time I’m in a charity shop I promise not to overlook your CD’s in the secondhand rails. I’ll leave her alone now.)

Timing out, awful technique, can't sing without a microphone. Why would anyone pay to hear that? I know she has a fan base - but that doesn't mean she has any discernible talent.

Watching that video there's a part of me suspects that there's a joke here that's going right over my head, because it sounds like they've hired a separate voice actress to sing it for her and couldn't get one that sounded remotely like her speaking voice.
As an aside, it has always amused me to think of football fans on the terraces singing a showtune.

She does not sing this number in the show though. That doesn't matter. It shows she is completely unable to sing this genre of music.

At Annie Get Your Gun on Saturday I got into conversation with the lady next to me about theatre & she enthused over Alfie Boe & Katherine Jenkins being in Carousel. I tactfully said that, having seen the last West End revival & Opera North's, I didn't feel the need to see another production at the moment. I thought saying that I wouldn't see it if I was paid to would be a bit of a conversation killer!

Booked front row of Balcony for this- going strictly for the music (have never heard of either star as I am a Yank...) and am less than impressed with what I have heard!

Alfie will be better. At least he'll have a clear head as he'll have a pocketful of Fishermans Friend!

We saw Ms Jenkins live at the Barbican over Christmas. She did sing You'll Never Walk Alone and although I don't like her voice, I don't dismiss it entirely. However, it is her complete lack of personality which makes me think she will be terrible as Julie. She usually wears floaty ballgowns and has diamante encrusted microphones for goodness sake. That's her audience, chaps who like that sort of thing.

In my humble opinion she isn't that bad at all. I can see the dissapoint and uncertainty amongst fellow board members as she may not have such fluid breath control and much experience in musical theatre but people doubted Nicole scherzinger in cats and she nailed it. (Again in my humble opinion) Alfie I'm sure will be very good I'm sure even though he's tenor. But norm Lewis (yes I know a well respected Broadway/west end veteran) was high baritone doing phantom which is tenor role, and the show I saw him he was fantastic even though I could see the very very minor struggles he had in some songs. I'm not asking people to get aboard the casting. But carousel is one of my favourite musicals and I personally think it's smart casting (financially) if we're to see the life of ENO survive! I'd loved to see Sierra boggess as Julie however but have no hang ups. I wish her all the best! I'm sure she me surprise you! And even its not up for everyone a personal taste, she defiantly is not going to be rubbish. I imagine the directors and panel might perhaps work on acting and other things which she hasn't been to familiar before general rehearsals. I hope I'm right, and I'm very excited, she could be your bext favourite interpreter of Julie. Who knows!!?!
I've been hearing a lot of negative reviews and never post much so This was just food for thought and my HUMBLE views!
