Or pick opera singers who are great actors. Which is what Opera North did successfully a few years ago. Anyone who thinks the comments on here are negative evidently hasn't read the ones on Twitter. Every opera singer, MT performer & critic who I've seen comment has been negative. My favourite was Neil Fisher, one of The Times critics, re-captioning Baz's article as "You'll Never Squawk Alone"!

I think because this has been announced so much later in the year than previous years, they must have been struggling to cast this.

I hope it's not as bad as Kismet was at the ENO a few years back. It got panned by every critic.
If only they had brought Joanna Riding back. They could have promoted it as her award winning performance! The NT production had me in tears. Katherine Jenkins is So wrong for this on every level.

Unfortunately it's all gone a bit 'Sarah Harding' with twitter showing its ugly said again, with Katherine being tagged in various rather nasty tweets about her. That's not cool.

The ENO really is toxic cesspit
Their productions look like they cost £10 to stage
They paper everything
Nothing sells out there
They had cheapest and nastiest refurbishment
Coliseum should be shut down
Transformed
Needs to be turned into massive Chanel shop
Just look at the ROH
One major opera house is enough particularly when that one is a massive financial success
The ENO is a joke in comparison

I find it so horrible when people do that. Okay, not everyone is going to like every piece of casting in every show but they're shouldn't express their opinions like that let alone tag the person in the tweet so they see it appear in their notification!! That's just plain bullying, I'd hate to think what Katherine is thinking looking at those tweets because she has honestly got a really nice voice

I would not protest too loudly if it's subsidy was withdrawn. Just how do you evaluate the Royal Opera and Ballet as a massive financial success? They get even more subsidy and pay bigger money to attract staff. Since they were both refurbed, the ROH and Coliseum are the best appointed and most comfortable theatres in London. Toxic Cesspit? Somthing has yanked your chain

The foyer areas of the Coliseum are particularly nasty upstairs. No character at all.

There is no doubting the technique of La Jenkins or her popularity, but to me she disappoints as nearly everything she sings is coloured with the same bland simpering sweetness, and angled head that allows the hair to tumble down regardless of the emotion or content. I am hoping that under a good director she will find the variation and feisty character that flirty, tragic, stoic Julie is made of.

She only has a career because she is pretty. Her voice is horrible- like Andrea Boccelli, it's 'opera lite' for people who wouldn't know a good operatic voice if it slapped them round the face.

I don't have any views on Katherine Jenkins other than that she does have a pretty face. I'm not sure I've ever heard her sing. I listen to lots of Opera and funily enough regret that there aren't more like her. Music Hall and even TV variety shows always had a good looking lass or a tenor with a twinkle in his eye and they sang a mixture of repertoire including 'light' Opera. The benefit to me is that it spread the music far and wide accross the land. Who cares if they claiemd to be stars from the Opera. She's going to get up on stage and sing and act and maybe then the critics on this thread will have something valid to say. Miss Jenkins doesn't offend me in any way. What's all the fuss?

The fuss is that the majority of folk on this board think she is unsuitable for the role for various reasons.
I think a performer has to have a "likeability" factor which is as important as the talent for singing or acting. Katherine Jenkins has no "likeability" for me, always coming across as a "cold fish". Her interviews are always saccharine sweet which, to me, appears very false. I imagine her as a complete diva. Of course I may be completely incorrect - I do not know her personally - but that is how she comes across to me.
As for her star quality regarding ticket sales - this remains to be seen. Glen Close she aint! It will be interesting to see how this sells, but there were no deals for Sunset - the producers held their prices!

I actually do like her in interviews and think she comes across as lovely, but I'm just not a fan of her singing voice.

I'm sure she's a lovely person, and I won't deny she's extremely pretty, I just don't enjoy her voice or think she's a good casting choice. Hooray for the people who will want to see her in this role, I hope you enjoy it as much as I'm sure I'd enjoy seeing other shows more.

I've never 'noped' so hard at a combination casting/show. In fairness I don't mind Boe as a singer and person from what I've seen of him but I wouldn't go out of my way to see him. Can't stand her or the musical itself though.

I am not a fan but she seems to do a lot to entertain troops abroad and that gets a gold star in my book.
