They stopped the show after the bit in which Ivy doesn't turn up for her date with Gabey and Hildy then tells Gabey that she will get him a date. They cut the whole Times Square ballet - Finale of Act I, which does not add an awful lot to the plot but it's beautifully executed.
Incidentally I was at a performance of Wicked where Elphaba didn't fly during Defying Gravity due to technical issues. She was 'Defying Gravity' while standing on the ground. I though it was quite amusing but some audience members were fuming.

Poor On the Town is not having much joy. And dare I mention, in light of that last post, that I think the staging of Defying Gravity, is a really clumsy, clunky piece of stagecraft. all sound and fury.

So how bad does the rain have to be for them to cancel, will they continue if its just a bit of drizzle?

So how bad does the rain have to be for them to cancel, will they continue if its just a bit of drizzle? It was raining (light rain) non-stop when I watched it and they stopped the show twice in Act 1 to mop the floor and the stairs etc. The rain kept going so they let us out for an early interval. It wasn't 'heavy' rainfall, but it was constant. They called the Met Office during the interval and they were told that the rain would continue for the next hour or so. In light of that, they cancelled the show.

On Thursday it wasn't heavy rain either to start with, but of course it makes the floor slippery for dancing so they had to stop twice to mop the floor. However 10 minutes into Act 2 it started raining quite heavily and then they cancelled. The irony was that it rained heavily for about 5 minutes and then it completely stopped. No rain at al during the way back to the tube station.

I went yesterday afternoon (for the second time) and I have got shocking sunburn. Despite the breeze, it was roasting.
There were a few people who had to leave as the sun was so hot.
It's such a lovely show. Good natured and joyful and a little bit sad at the end. Fabulous! And all the cast were wonderful (again), especially Miriam Teak Lee, who is phenomenal.
Had a celebrity spot of Matthew Bourne, top choreographer too.
Wish I could fit in going again.

Totally agree, it's a great show! I hope to go again soon.
Was Jacob Maynard back or was Matthew Caputo still playing Chip?

@theatremonkey you mentioned the two front row seats that are 3rd price (A3 & A4) as not being too bad other than missing feet. It appears that A1 & A2 are on sale now and they are 4th price, do you think they'd be worse than A3 & A4?

Thanks, think that's the answer I was looking for! I've been staring at the seating plan and looking at pictures of the stage from the audience on instagram and couldn't make up my mind. Now I have to figure out when to go out of the shows that still have those seats left.

Prerry much sold out yesterday, a wonderful summer evening and perfect for open air theatre. I loved how it got dark just in time for the show to move into the second act when it gets night in New York too. Wonderful production overall with a pretty perfect cast. Hard to believe that Jacob Maynard wasn't even first cast initially, he's so wonderful. I wish this show had an afterlife after the limited run in Regents Park.

I was also there last night and loved it. I saw the ENO's production 3 times and I found it hard not to compare. At ENO we had a wonderful orchestra, quite a stylised production, subtle choreography and the wonderful Caroline O'Connor
Here we have an explosion of fun that zips along. In both productions I was very moved by the ending, more so here because of the devastating battle scene ballet.
The sound at the Open Air can be poor but last night the band sounded great.
Not that keen on the gay pas de deux, it seemed distracting from from Gaby's search for love. However LOVED Miriam-Teak Lee. Great production. Go go go!

Went to see this on Saturday matinee with Caputo as Chip. I really enjoyed it but (I know I shouldn't complain really) it was uncomfortably hot in the sun. Quite a few people seemed to leave at and before the interval but I think it was more due to the heat and difficulty of sitting so long in it. Can't imagine what it must have been like dancing in it with some of those costumes but enormous fun and I would probably go for an evening performance, were I to go again.

I was there this evening and it was gorgeous from an audience perspective - warm but no direct sunlight, t-shirt weather right through to the end, but I didn't envy the guys up on stage dancing in the heat one little bit! As for the show - fabulous. Absolutely loved it

Really enjoyed this on Friday evening.
First time visiting the Open Air Theatre and I thought it was a terrific venue; very friendly staff and a lovely setting. My enjoyment was helped by the evening being much cooler than the heat of 48 hours earlier. The setting only got better as the light faded, with the twilight complementing the story so well after the interval.
The standout performers for me were Lizzy Connolly (perfectly cast and hilarious to watch as Hildy) alongside Jacob Maynard as Chip and Siena Kelly as Ivy. Hard to believe that Jacob was originally the understudy and that this is Siena's professional debut, they're both outstanding.
It's such a fun, colourful and vibrant production, the cast all looked to be having a ball and that enthusiasm was infectious. I expected a fairly limited set but was hugely impressed with what they did with the space. The short comic interludes during scene changes were a nice touch too. And what a joy to hear that gorgeous score.
What a great year for feel-good dance musicals this has been. I spent pretty much the whole evening grinning from ear to ear.
I'd love the chance to spend another night 'On The Town' in Regent's Park but while the rest of the run is sold out, on the strength of this production I've booked to see Jesus Christ Superstar in September. Looking forward to being back at the Open Air Theatre as much as seeing the show!

What was the point of them doing West End Live when they only have one week to run, and were already virtually sold out before Saturday?

What was the point of them doing West End Live when they only have one week to run, and were already virtually sold out before Saturday? Exposure for Regent's Park Open Air Theatre? Exposure for the individual actors

Just back put me down as another big fan of this production. Had never seen the show and now regret not making more effort in the past. The score is fabulous.
For those who complained of lack of plot I thought the framing device,24hrs of freedom, made it a pressure cooker, then just add boy meets girl x 3 and ding, ding, ding! we have a winner. (It worked much better than on the film.) To think this was on stage before the end of WW11 when shore leave really meant something. All the details in Some Other Time where they long to experience the boring bits of a relationship, made it so poignant.
Cast, choreography all very good if not upto the standards of 42nd Street and AAIP. London is blessed for classic musicals this summer.
Also in the film don't they change "it's a hell of a town...." to "it's a wonderful town..."
Shame the last performance is tonight (?) I would happily have gone again.

I saw todays matinee and loved it. It felt modern and up to date, yet still classic. I think the female characters considering the time it was written are strong and match modern day women. Loved the choreography, the set was very impressive and great costumes.
The gay pas de deux i wasnt 100% sold on but it was beautifully choreographed and performed, just not sure it really fit in with the flow of the story. It was fun watching the guy in front look so uncomfortable
Danny Mac was so much better than i expected and gives me hope for sunset. good voice with decent power behind it. Samuel Edwards was stronger here than in wicked but the stand out of the three for me was Jacob Maynard.
The three women were all very good but no one shone more than any one else
Its just a fun feel good show with some bittersweet moments. I dont think theres a lack of plot, considering the story only takes place in one 24 hour period i found the pacing perfect
Also, is this the hottest cast in london?! i mean seriously!!

I saw todays matinee and loved it. It felt modern and up to date, yet still classic. Also, is this the hottest cast in london?! i mean seriously!! Interestingly this appeared a year after Oklahoma but it retains the old Music then Comedy then Music format, with no real attempt to blur the edges. The musical interludes were a bonus. So the females were 'modern', but the format was anything but. and...errrr...yes...yes I thought so.

Yes i wasnt referring to format, more that this is a musical with at least two strong female characters (Ivy is a bit lacking in development) in charge of their own sexuality and life. To me the majority of the piece could be set now. it didnt feel dated in that respect
haha yeah, upclose to the stage it was hard to know who to watch!
I forgot to add i loved how masculine the choreography was

Miriam-Teak Lee the clear standout of the women, by some measure: that thrilling soprano matched to a genuinely witty and welcoming stage presence: the woman is a star in the making, brava !
