I'm wondering if this "unfamiliarity" with the show's many wonderful songs is because a lot of people have only been exposed to the movie which, notoriously, junked most of the Bernstein score and replaced it with a bunch of hack work numbers by Roger Edens because it was felt that the original music was somehow too complex for the general populace. The movie and the show are, musically speaking, two different creatures.

I had no idee of the score for this (never seen the movie) but I've listened to the recent Broadway cast recording on Spotify a few times now and I find the score delightful, especially "Lonely Town" and "Some other time". Sure, these songs may not be as iconic as those from West Side Story, but I'm really looking forward to this show and to hearing these songs live.

What can one say? It's a glorious score and a shame if its virtues were lost on you, with a half-dozen or more iconic numbers from the Broadway songbook not least "Some Other Time". Very odd that somehow your defense is that you haven't heard it before --- so what? does that mean Hamlet is a bad play if one hasn't perhaps seen it before? That's the entire point of exposure - you have to start somewhere. Sorry if your ear doesn't take to Bernstein. Defence? I hadn't realised that my having an opinion that dared to differ from yours was wrong! And I also hadn't realised that just because I don't find this particular score particularly memorable it means I don't "take to" Bernstein - funnily enough West Side Story has long been my favourite musical, so I'd thank you to stop making broad brush assumptions about me and deciding that your opinion is the only correct one. It's not - you'd do well to remind yourself of the definition of opinion... The point I was making which seems to have passed you by entirely is that just because a score is "iconic" (and even that is just opinion, but no matter) doesn't mean that people are required to like it, or that it is "good" as a matter of fact. There is no such thing - musical tastes are entirely opinion. If someone hasn't heard a score before then they're perfectly entitled to say it isn't memorable if that's what they think, whether or not it is "iconic" to other people. I really don't understand why some people here are finding it difficult to comprehend that others don't subscribe to the view that just because a score is deemed "iconic" everyone automatically has to love it... |

Matthew Caputo is on for Chip today. It is currently raining so the interval has been brought forward slightly.
The cast and crew are doing a good job to keep the show going and mopping up the stage.

Do you get a refund if they've done half the show? Sadly no, they give you a white postcard "Weather exchange card" and you can redeem it for another ticket It was forecast to stay dry until 10pm, but it rained on and off from 8pm. |

I was also there tonight - thought both staff and audience were very patient and gracious despite several pauses for mopping and the eventual cancellation. Thought Matthew Caputo was doing very well as Chip, Samuel Edwards was hilarious as Ozzie, and all three leading women excellent. Danny Mac left a little to be desired - a good mover yes, but I wanted to hear a bit more power in his voice and I think he needed just a little more charisma too. Will reserve full judgement until I've seen the whole show though - very excited, I was loving it!
Aside: the gay 'pas des deux' (for lack of better terminology) was breathtaking - Drew McOnie excels at that kind of intimate choreography.

Something has to go at the start of the season. Why not this? It still rains in July and August! It would be silly to programme 2 musicals one after the other.

I turned up at around midday today and was told there were only 4 seats left - price band A, no discounts. However, the theatre can't have been more than two-thirds full tonight, with the lower price band seats very sparsely populated, so I wonder whether they actually had lots of availability but were only putting top price on sale for some reason? |

Ive seen tickets drop off TT an hour before a show, but then gone to the theatre and theres still availability. Then for other shows theres still been tickets on sale 20 minutes before hand. They do say tickets should be collected 15minutes before a performance, so perhaps thats the cutoff? |

I went last night. Show was stopped twice during Act I. They cut the final number for act I. Then Act II started but after 10 minutes they stopped it and decided to cancel the rest because of the rain.
It was my third time. Matthew Caputo was on as Chip. I've seen the show now 3 times, - 2 and a half really, with 3 different actors playing Chip. I thought Matthew Caputo was a bit better than Jacob Maynard especially in the comedy bits, still not as good as Fred Haig.
The show, or what we managed to see of it, looked in good shape.
Jacob Maynard was seating in the audience.

If you whizz up to the box office on a scooter, the clerk will see that you are capable of speeding away to a rival venue, so you may be offered a bigger discount. |
