To be clear, the Old Vic does not receive a penny of public money so cannot be considered a subsidised theatre. Revenue comes from ticket sales and corporate sponsorship. Yes, Master Builder will go to Broadway and Groundhog Day and The Caretaker will be hits. This is what allows Warchus to put on plays like Future Conditional and Hairy Ape which demand a great deal from the audience. Whilst some tickets are £140, there are significant numbers of cheap seats and £10 previews.

Groundhog Day is going to Broadway. Is Master Builder going to?

It's weird that it has Broadway dates confirmed, yet it's world premiere doesn't yet.

Nah, I'd buy that. Broadway theatres are in heavy demand, so if you can pencil in your dates as early as possible, you minimise the possibility you'll be all dressed up with nowhere to go. As for not having the Old Vic dates set yet, well, they're still writing it. While I expect they know which dates they're aiming for, it would be foolish to publicly announce it too soon, running the risk they might have to upset people by killing some previews because they miscalculated something. We know it's coming, we can make an educated guess at it being around June time, and as it's based on a popular film and anyone involved will be expecting it to be for the long haul, I'd also be willing to guess at it being at least a 9 week run (a la Master Builder, rather than a 7 week run, a la The Caretaker), if not a little longer. We just need to have a little more patience.

New York is better equipped with mid size houses that London isn't, they are normally too big or too small. However demand is great the January cull wasn't big this year and didn't free up any big houses. The Shuberts even had to team up with Nederlander and put Cats in one of their theatre, because of lack of real estate.
However I stand by what I said earlier, thee is no talk of Groundhog Day or Master Builder aren't planned to go into the West End and both have big Broadway producer backing. The problem is if you intend to cash in, it often backfires badly. But £140 a ticket is brutal. The Old Vic does receive public funding.
When do tickets go on sale please?

The dates aren't announced for The Old Vic, so how are we supposed to know when they go on sale.

The dates aren't announced for The Old Vic, so how are we supposed to know when they go on sale. The Old Vic website did say that it would go on sale "early 2016", and if it's supposed to open June then I'd imagine it should be announced soon surely.

In fact, in response to the comment above, the Old Vic receives precisely NO regular public subsidy. The theatre did receive a one-off £5 million grant a few years back to create an endowment but it is not an ACE client in the way that the National and the RSC are, to name just two ACE recipients out of many. Kevin Spacey made this point repeatedly during his tenure, which is why he did the amount of glad-handing that he did, and why they will be hoping GROUNDHOG DAY is a big hit.

Agree he's a very different choice to Bill Murray for the role - younger for one thing! What's everyone's guess for Rita? He's actually slightly older than Murray was in Groundhog Day. Don't rate him much as a performer, but haven't seen him attempt comedy, so could be surprised. Whatever happens they're going to have to take it in a slightly different direction to the film surely - there's no competing with Murray...

Bumping this thread up to see if anyone has heard anything about dates for the Old Vic run? It's been over a month since last post Maybe given the success of Matilda or Tim Minchin's fanbase, the Old Vic might be expecting high demand for tickets so they may announce and release tickets quite late (I.e. Funny Girl at the Menier Chocolate Factory last autumn)

Wow, that came very suddenly! I wonder how chances will be for non-members to book, come 12 April? As basic membership costs ''only' £35, I might have to splurge here again. Feels like a risk to postpone booking until general sale....

Well, I'm out I had kept a Saturday Matinee "open" for this in July but there's no matinee that Saturday and I can't shuffle anything else around. Let's hope it will transfer.

thinking of going for membership too, I don't trust The Old Vic booking site to work in my favour on general sale day!

I heard the team were rude and horrible to performers at the auditions from 3 different people. Not good. Puts a whole bad taste in my mouth about the show. The theatre world is very small.

On sale to members today - general booking april 12 Runs Monday 11 July – Saturday 17 September 2016.
Worth pointing out that press night is Tuesday 16 August, so that's a long run of previews - longer than the "real" run at first glance!
Today's booking is only for the very top level, and then they add more people every day until booking for people who are just "Friends" opens on Tuesday 22 March at 12 noon. From the email there appears to be SEVEN levels of support higher than "Friends". For an theatre with dreams of egalitarianism, that's a lot of class distinction...

I can't wait to see if Andy Karl's recently introduced supporting character on Law & Order gets killed/sent off somewhere on a "special assignment"/has a near-death experience and decides on a career change.

So glad that this has finally announced dates! Very effective yet simple poster having the title repeated. I imagine that this could potentially be a sell out like Funny Girl at the Menier Chocolate Factory (although maybe not as quick).

I imagine that this could potentially be a sell out like Funny Girl at the Menier Chocolate Factory (although maybe not as quick). I assume because it's going to Broadway, it won't transfer if it's a hit since the creative team will want to make any changes before they go to NY. Given Sony and Scott Rudin are co-producing, it'll likely have a bigger budget compared to past Old Vic musicals
