I agree that there is no natural break in follies to have an interval. But won't that make the show about 5 hours long? After all it is Sondheim. From doing a quick google search, I got a variety of answers from this thread on Broadwayworld.com:

Every production seems to be different! 2h, 2h 15m, 2h 10m, 2:20m, 2h 30m, 2h 40m... so do with that what you will

I actually think Tracie is gonna be fabulous. I really loved her in Mrs Henderson Presents, and she was apparently amazing in End of The Rainbow. And it's only one song really isn't it, how much could she f*** it up. |

I'm actually really looking forward to seeing Janie Dee in this, I thing she's a prefect casting choice, Staunton on the other hand I'm not sure at all, but I'll be happy to be proven wrong

Last Friday rush had a few seats for 20 pounds for some following week performances, but they were all last rows in the upper circle. they went quick and the queue was slow.

On the DVD of the (less than wonderful) Toulon Opera production, the show runs 128 minutes, which means with an interval (which the production had) it would have been around two and a half hours. I'm sure I remember reading that the original Broadway production, performed without an interval, also had a running time somewhere around two hours and ten minutes. Plenty of films are longer. This production, from everything we know so far, isn't going to be using precisely the same version of the book as the Toulon Opera DVD or the last two Broadway revivals; if they go ahead and run it without an interval, I wouldn't expect the running time to be much more than two hours and ten minutes, though - it's unlikely any additional musical numbers will be shoehorned in, although it's possible that 'Ah, But Underneath' could be substituted for 'Lucy and Jessie'. I suppose there's a chance they could add 'Country House' - less than five minutes extra, including the dialogue leading into it - but I'd be very surprised if they went through the back catalogue and included any of the (many) cut numbers. Much as I'm curious to know how (if?) it works, I don't expect to hear, for example, something like 'Pleasant Little Kingdom'. |

That really is ridiculously long for a single act. I can just picture so many people wandering in and out of the auditorium to the toilets during the show...

How do I get a copy of the Toulon Opera DVD? Amazon.fr - search 'Follies' and it should be the first thing that comes up. Be warned that it's a very problematic production - and sometimes worse than that. It's a very problematic production with a few lovely things in it, though. In particular, Charlotte Page (Sally) and Liz Robertson (Phyllis) are both very good. |

Come on now: man up (or should I say 'person up') you afficianados of musical theatre. We Wagnerites are more than used to a two hour stint without any interval. 'Das Rehingold', the First Act of 'Gotterdammerung' (including the Prologue) and the Third Act of 'Die Meistersinger' all run for more than two hours. And I have seen two separate productions of Mussorgsky's original version of 'Boris Godunov' played straight through which I am sure took about two hours or more. Just remember not to drink too much before the show and make sure you have a precautionary pee before taking your seats. Easy peasy!

Oh, that is not long at all. Think of it as a film screening, where the whole experience is usually considerably longer and no-one usually has problems there.

When it's a long Act 3 as you've spent the preceding few hours unable to drink, except briefly in the intervals, you're entering Act 3 somewhat dehydrated so are less likely to need the loo mid-act. Hence I've made it through 3 live Meistersingers (Act 3 on the ROH's side stalls circle benches was an uncomfortable experience seating-wise though). I've never seen Rheingold or Gotterdammerung live & the over 2h uninterrupted length is one of the things that somewhat puts me of seeing them. I'm supposed to be seeing Follies on 1st September but if it is going to run over 2h & the weather be warm then I might skip that one & wait till December when it's cooler, otherwise I'll either get a headache from dehydration or be desparate to go to the loo for half the show, or possibly both together. Oh, that is not long at all. Think of it as a film screening, where the whole experience is usually considerably longer and no-one usually has problems there. The few times I've been to the cinema in the last 15 years have all been for live screenings of opera or ballet which have had intervals so that's no comfort for me! |

Well, I always go to the cinema in the Netherlands, where they do intermissions... usually at the most annoying moment, completely tearing you out of the action and plot. Though I admit that I sometimes long for the intermission to come along just because I need the potty. But I hope I'll get by. I've managed to survive films without the potty break and longer flights where I was stuck in the window seat and too polite to ask people beside me to get up. Seeing this on 2nd September and quite excited by now! |

Can people really not hold their bladders for that long? It always annoys me when a first act is about to end and someone gets up to go to the toilet, then shuffles back in midway through the closer. I really think, if there is two minutes left, they should just be told to stand at the back. Two hours isn't gonna kill ya!
