I see Tamsin Outhwaite has broken her foot and temporarily withdrawn from the production - Anna Jane Casey joins the cast until she returns.

Went to see this this afternoon. All I can say is a huge hats off to Anna Jane Casey, who I thought gave the best performance of the show. Unbelievable that she has had only a week to learn the part - I cannot imagine anyone else playing the role now. When the cast took their bows at the end, they lined up together as an ensemble, but Amanda tried to shove Anna forward - but she wouldn't go!
What was the show like? Light, flimsy, quite entertaining, but certainly not the stuff of Oliviers! I thought the second half was better than the first, and the audience seemed to enjoy it.

Just watched the cast on Comic Relief prog and hadn't realised that AJ Casey was now in the cast. One of my favourite performers and she is a great dancer.
Going to have to get tkts now

Saw this last night and I have to say I really enjoyed it. Ground breaking piece of theatre? No. But it is a nice comedy. It's very much an ensemble piece and I agree with some of the tabloid reviews that the characters aren't really developed because there's so many but you do get enough to keep your interest. I was pleasantly surprised with Amanda Holden's performance, I really did think she did an excellent job and got a lot of laughs. There really wasn't a weak link in the cast. I think it'll do well for the shall we say mature market and I think that's reflected in the 2 midweek matinee's a week set up. First act felt very short, finished just before 8.20pm but the second act felt much tighter and was a lot more fun, especially with the final dancing at the end. Enjoyed the 80s theming and the 80s tunes played prior to starting. Overall a great light fun evening.

It seems to be regularly at TKTS at around 40-50% off for about £35 for stalls and dress circle. Even Fridays and Saturdays although seats may be better allocated in the early part of the week.

Saw the matinee on Saturday. I think I would best describe it as a warm and cuddly kind of show. Well acted by all the cast. Yes, Amanda Holden was clearly the one most of the audience wanted to see, but everyone has a story to tell and I thought it was a good production, keeping itself firmly in the 80s. Stand out person for me was Anny-Jane Casey. For me this is ultimately a dark comedy rather than something that was designed to be a laugh a minute. Back in 1984 some of the subject matter might have seen more comedic. In the present day the audience possibly sees and hears it differently. When Vera talks about the time her older husband spends with their young daughter, the audience immediately reacted seeing this as some form of possible grooming. Back in 1984 grooming was a reference for Bee Gee haircuts.
Theatre almost full for matinee. Like the cast the men in the audience were very much in the minority. On the plus side it meant we didn't have to queue for the loos! |

Saw this this evening and with my extended bout of Winter blues (April? STILL!? Thanks!) this really hit the spot. Silly, tap dancing and confetti cannon!
Rolled up at 5.10pm and got a premium seat in the stalls for £20!

Does anyone know if this is a revival as I saw a production years ago in the west end very short lived if I recall I remember it being enjoyable and sure Sharon d Clarke was in it ??

Richard Harris adapted his own 1984 play (which is now revived at the Vaudeville) into a musical in the 90s (music by Denis King) and it had a brief stint at the Albery (now Noel Coward) in 1997 with SDC in it. I think Elaine Paige played a song from it on yesterday's show.
Also, for those that are interested, Josefina Gabrielle has taken over from Anna Jane Casey in this.
