He was there on Saturday. And not on Monday. Robert Hands has joined the company to play Father for the remaining two weeks. He's gone off to do concerts in Singapore it seems. |

Saw this tonight. Really enjoyed it. I think some people's voices were struggling but it didn't matter. I would've preferred a few less of the historical figures but that's my only criticism. I, too, have ordered the CD with the Statue of Liberty on the front.

For those who saw it, how was the Regents Park version different - I guess no musicians on stage? I've seen mainly negative review of that production, what was wrong with it? I just watched a sort of trailer and some of it looked like it was set nowadays?!

Wow. Interesting. Sounds a very odd decision.
I genuinely think some people didn't realise that there was more after the first half. I heard someone say 'is that it?' and lots of people didn't seem to come back after the interval - I can't imagine that many people not wanting to see more.

I love confused audience members...donkeys years ago I was working front of house on the Opera North production of Nabucco at the Palace Theatre in Manchester. At the interval an elderly couple discussing the show in the foyer stopped me to ask 'Which part is Michael Crawford playing because we can't understand any of the show, we didn't know it was in Italian" - they had tickets for Barnum at the Opera House just down the road!  |

Insomnia thought (hope no one else has said it): I really don't think Back to Before fits with the rest of the score at all. I love it as a standalone song and will listen to it non-stop but it's just not a good fit (unless the Anita Louise Combe version earlier in the thread was a 'single' version and there's a different version in the show - I shall wait until my soundtrack arrives).

Panda posted the story about confused audience members - two short stories. Watching the RSC musical of Merry wives a few years back, a mother and daughter next to me walked out early on as they had paid to see Simon Cowell in it, not Simon Callow as Falstaff. Likewise, I heard an elderly couple complaining in the interval at a production of Turn of the Screw that I had directed that they didn't realise it would be sexual and scary. They had come to see Taming of the Shrew.

On the train back home after seeing this. Wow! Amazing, standing ovation at curtain, not ashamed to say i had tears. Five stars. This should have a life after next sat😉😉

Saw this last night after the disappointment of Dream Girls in the afternoon. Every thing as good as Titanic, great cast and was well received by the almost full audience. I have always loved Ragtime and was really looking forward to seeing this when it was booked into the Prince Edward after Showboat back in the 90's. Great pity not to see the show with it's huge cast from the States. I really do not like actor/musician shows, to me a musical should be as it started life - cast and orchestra, but I must say I really enjoyed this production. I thought of it as a semi-staged show. I know most of you will not agree as it was fully staged - but fitted my way of looking at it. Standing ovation at the end and really prolonged applause at the end. Two up to the Charing Cross Theatre!! Lets see what "Death" does next.

Drama at Ragtime tonight.
The cast member playing Washington was 'indisposed' and they turned the performance into a semi staged concert version.
Those who have seen the show may know how vital that actor is to the whole production therefore preventing them from putting on the show with full choreography. Though my enjoyment wasn't really hampered. The music was wonderful and the cast fantastic to pull that off so well.
Sadly there were about a dozen people who clearly weren't impressed with the decision to concert version the show and walked out almost immediately. I was just relieved they didn't cancel the show, though I got the impression from the speech at the start that had there been weeks left of the run they would have done.

It was an ensemble member and I can't remember his name, though he was heavy build. The character didn't seem to do much though, so either the actor is vital for certain bits or he was injured with the set which has subsequently broken. Not sure if whatever the issue is will be resolved before tomorrow and they'll be able to put on the full performance tomorrow. |

He was quite important at points. What did they do in terms of lighting and acting? Well the stage lights stayed on for the whole thing. The cast came to the front of the stage for the majority of their scenes, unless a character was playing a piano, in which case the MD piano was static at stage right and Porter's piano was static at the back. There was two rows of black chairs on the stage which the cast sat on for the duration. The cast never really left the stage and returned to their seats after their 'scene' except for occasions when they walked off (to get a drink/toilet?), but this might be the normal case and the cast ARE always on stage dotted around as obviously the ones with the instruments can never really leave anyway. The two children were very good as they were basically front and centre for the duration and never showed any signs of breaking character during their quiet periods. There were no costume changes until the interval (from the words of the script I assumed there should have been in places, maybe there aren't any). Would have been nice to see the full production obviously, but this was nice and a different experience from a talented company. |

I understand that it's incredible expensive to put on such a big show and it's hard to make back because it's such a small theatre. But if you're going to have such a long run without any understudies, you just know it will go wrong at some point.

I think it must be the time of year, because Titanic had a longer run without ever cancelling a show or having to do a semi-staged thing although they. (Although Ida Strauss didn't sing her part of her duet on one/several performances apparently.) Also maybe Ragtime's got a bigger cast but we know of at least two cast members missing shows. |

I think it's probably the actor/musician set-up which has caused the 'Ragtime' problems.
'Titanic'had the traditional orchestra accompaniment.
But I'm sure lack of understudies/swings has not helped!
