Who was out of the show that they couldn't do the whole thing? Remember it is actor-muso, so an absence is loosing both an actor and a band member, hence why absences cause such issues. Though really they should have a couple of swings versed in each role (well 4, black/white female/male) and then get in a musician to cover the instrument track. |

I just can't believe what's been going on in London theatre lately. First in the heights closed down for a week because they didn't bother rehearsing their new cast in time, now this. The producers really need to step up their game.

Though disappointed not to see the full staging, this was still a terrific evening. It was inspiring to see a company pull together to produce something that works for an audience, and work it did. The score is outstanding and the cast are magnificent, and richly deserved the standing ovation at the end. I still would love to see the full thing but the focus here mainly on the music and singing had a truly powerful effect. Loved it but yes, would love to see it again the way I'd been expecting to see it. Glad they didn't cancel though.

Saw the matinee today. Full house (cast, that is). It was so, so good, and yet .... why was I completely unmoved? I was totally absorbed, the time flew past, I appreciated the hard work everyone had put it etc etc. I don't know.

Is it back to being properly staged now? I'd quite like to see it before it closes, but not fussed about seeing a concert version.

Did they offer refunds when they did the concert version? I'm fine with understudies, including once at the menier when the director ended up performing script in hand, but to actually not perform the show you've booked for seems something else entirely!

This was a new musical for me and also a new theatre. I knew nothing about either before last night. This was one of my favourite things that I have seen this year! I loved the music and the cast were great without exception. To organise a cast that size with their instruments and make it all come together I thought was wonderful and very clever.
I will also be going back to the Charing Cross Theatre. I think I prefer smaller venues than the really huge theatres. You feel as though you are a part of the show in smaller places and I like that. It's what I like about St. James or whatever it is going to be called. I hope they don't change it too much.

Saw it yesterday matinee - absolutely WONDERFUL! How have I never seen this show in previous incarnations?!
It was very up my street and I was enthralled by the story, the themes, the characters and the performances.
Fabulous to see Earl Carpenter and Anita Louise Combe back on stage, and in lead roles.
Once again it was an actor musician production that was cleverly crafted and featured a dazzlingly talented company. A great story with themes about America, race and immigration that have become so very topical again this year.
I was left with great songs ringing in my ears and a lasting resonance, musing about the storyline and it's themes.

I'm glad someone brought that up, I had forgotten but I saw this tweet from the 26th:
I've a friend in the cast who posted a picture with him saying he was leaving etc, so he wasn't keeping it too quiet, but he certainly wasn't advertised as being in it for a limited time, was he?
