Apart from at Shakespeare's Globe and Regents Park Open Air Theatre, this must be one of the few plays in London which makes a different impact in different weather conditions!

I saw this last week.
It's about a family getting together in a formal family discussion circle to discuss the secrets one member wants everyone to confront.
At first it can be confusing: who's who and what are they saying. That's because only some characters have names; others are referred to by their relationship (Couzin, Brotha (sic), Twin 1, Twin 2 etc). It takes a while to work out who Couzin is cousin to and who Brotha is brother to. And, from the start there's a lot of simultaneous talking and interrupting, which means you really have to pay attention to hear everything.
It's a dysfunctional family drama that has a bit of a twist. It is well acted and had one of my companions discussing it well into the following day.
Well worth a punt.

Seeing it this week but date now clashes with my only chance to see something else; however, the run is now sold out (can't do Mondays), so though I'm sure they could re-sell my ticket, I have a dilemma re which to choose. Infuriating how often it happens that you spend ages trying to juggle dates and still end up in this situation!

But there is an audibility issue due to the staging

I have the same recurring problem with audibility due to echoes in certain theatres, so I understand exactly what you mean, but I didn't notice such an issue at Torn. Which perhaps means that you can hear better in some seats than in others. For what it's worth, I sat on a high stool very near the refreshment table, below the mezzanine.

Interesting to see this and will keep an eye out for the writer. Although only 90 mins long (it finished bang on time at 4.30 pm) it felt a LOT longer; possibly too long with no interval, though I can understand that a break in the proceedings might seem inappropriate. The language was an odd mixture of normal speech and, imo, ludicrously lyrical and unrealistic passages which I could have done without, but overall, worth it for the experience and a name to watch.

Loads of overlapping dialogue and simultaneous interwoven conversations. I think you need to be in the room to really understand who is talking to whom at any point. Even watching it it took a fair bit of time to work out what was going on as it jumps about in time and it's not instantly obvious who is related to whom and in what way. |
