My point is that nobody has said anything new in pages and pages, and it’s just back and forth hence the suggestion to can it until something actually does. But everyone appears so uptight and desperate to be right that the actual discussion has got lost. I thought I’d seen some furores in my time on this board but nothing compares to the pearl clutching on here; not sure if its people aghast that their favourite might change, or people that GENUINELY care about the loss of jobs etc. It’s quite right that it’s passive aggressive. It’s the dictionary definition of it. Without change nothing moves forward and you’ll just get the same dusty old show eating into its savings while the world changes around it.

Well this moves things on a teeny bit:
First week seems to have been taken off sale and instead of 21st July, first show on sale is now 28th July.
Stranger and stranger.
Clutching at straws perhaps, but this is sort of new info!

I'm looking to book for this and have a budget of £50. Are any of the RV tickets worth a look at? Thanks.

Sorry BB but I think the reaction to the changes is a bigger problem than the changes themselves. Just not a fan of that sort of entitlement. If holding that opinion is a problem feel free to delete it.

I last saw it sat in Royal Circle F34 and that was fine too, I got it on a deal for 30 quid so may be slightly more than that normally

Clutching at straws perhaps, but this is sort of new info! Damn. That starts to eat into the summer holiday period for me. Really could do with some concrete dates now that it's nearly May. How difficult can it be to rejig the schedule? Or is all the effort going into the increasingly desperate Cinderella launch?

Yeah my hunch (looking at the depressingly empty seating plans) is that they’re gonna delay until the Autumn. Not sure ALW will want three non socially distanced musicals over the Summer, with audiences uncertain, and is more likely to focus on Cinderella and Joseph. Well, he’s not producing the latter, but it’s still in an LWT! Though that doesn’t explain taking one week off sale at this stage! Edit - tell a lie! Just had an email saying it’s opening 27th July!

Dear Fiyero
It has been announced today that The Phantom of the Opera will now reopen at Her Majesty's Theatre in London on Tuesday 27 July 2021. This may mean that some existing bookings will need to be moved and we will contact any affected customers over the next few days with details of their new performances.
We have temporarily taken all performances off sale whilst we work behind the scenes to arrange ticket exchanges for those customers whose bookings are impacted by the new schedule. The Phantom of the Opera will go back on sale on Tuesday 4 May.
We're contacting all our guests individually, so please bear with us as we work through each booking as quickly and carefully as possible.
You don't need to do anything
We know how much you're looking forward to seeing Phantom, so to make it nice and easy for you, any affected bookings will be moved into an alternative performance.
We understand that bookings may have been made for specific dates and performances and we will do our very best to move any bookings that are impacted.
We’ll be in contact with you very soon to confirm the new performance details, including information about how to exchange your tickets for a new date or obtain a refund should you need to. Please keep an eye on your inbox, junk and spam folders for this email.
Please don't contact us until we've contacted you. On behalf of the producers, we'd like to thank you for booking tickets to see The Phantom of the Opera and look forward to welcoming you to Her Majesty's Theatre very soon.
Thank you for your ongoing support and patience.
With our best wishes,
The LW Theatres Team

Yup, just woken up to that email too. The big question is whether bookers for the first performance will retain their seats or get bumped. Originally they were opening on a Saturday with the next perf being a Tuesday. Wondering if they're following the same model (i.e. a special Saturday perf on 24th) or whether Tues 27 is the bona fide opening date. We will find out over coming days. Good luck to pals who booked for opening night - hope you get transferred accordingly. (Since word has been broken on so many promises so far, I'm not confident that those who bought in early with vouchers for first dibs on seats will be looked after.) Aside from orchestra changes etc., even staunch defenders of the producers are having patience and loyalty tested by this. Is anybody from RUG/CML reading? If so, buck up on your approach. Covid pandemic is not an excuse for crap customer service, and very many other people and businesses have also struggled over the last year. The ambiguity around all of this (show, orchestra, dates, Phantom, Cinderella etc) makes me feel that too much sentiment and a gung-ho approach has muddled an otherwise straightforward planning process.

Yes it is all a bit shambolic isn't it! Still wouldn't be surprised if ends up being postponed yet again.
There does also seem to be increasing murmurings that covid status certificates will be needed for full events - so maybe it's to give them time to implement that.

CamMack’s non apology. He’s come out fighting...
Quoting WOS: Mackintosh stood by the move, stating that: "Am I sorry? I'm sorry they're upset, but I do find it odd why musicians would want to keep doing the same thing year after year. I believe we should not be holding jobs for actors or musicians ad infinitum. This is not the Civil Service, we're creating art."
Well that’s answered that then!

I mean, if he wanted to defend it, he could have just said that he looked at all options and concluded there was no way to continue having the same orchestra. That would have at least been more professional than taking cheap shots at those whose livelihood is now on the line. It's like when Priti Patel said she was sorry that people "felt" or "perceived" she had been bullying! One could equally ask why a producer would want to produce the same shows again and again. And obviously the chandelier will be faster if it has a lesser distance to travel!

Interesting twist he's spun here, implying we should be grateful that without the pandemic causing the cancellation of the UK Tour, Phantom on West End would have closed. It's 'have the touring production or nothing at all'.
With regard to the musicians comment, so he doesn't want musicians or actors to keep working on the same show, I presume that means he doesn't want fans to return to the same shows either then. After all, why would we "want to keep doing the same thing year after year"? Duly noted.

For those so outspoken about their feelings on ALW and CM, does it put you in an awkward position of not wanting to line their pockets further by buying tickets? Or are you so clear that you don't want to see the new show that it's not something you need to consider? Genuinely interested.

And on the Cameron comments. Fair enough I say. It IS sad for the musicians. But he doesn't owe anyone a contract renewal (least of all of one that doesn't even currently exist). He and ALW may produce as they wish. The ticket buying public may decide if they wish to spend their money on his product.
"I have spent 50 years delivering the highest-quality musicals this country has ever seen and I'm not about to stop now."
Amen.
And that's me over and out from this thread, at least until there is any new significant news or the show opens!

After all, why would we "want to keep doing the same thing year after year"? Duly noted. Does Cameron even realise what most jobs are? Most people don't have the luxury of doing something entirely different every day. I'm sure the musicians would be delighted to play different scores if the opportunities were there. Also Dom Cavendish's article is weird--he asks why Cameron hasn't done the same to the Broadway production, and the response is that the Majestic is bigger...and then says the London one was coming to the very end of its run. But Phantom's always been a better seller in London than in New York and the Majestic, as the bigger house, is more difficult to fill...and the running costs there are even higher. So that doesn't make much sense. His comments are also pure spin/delusional, saying he thinks Miz sounds better now than it did at the Palace! That is definitely not the case. At least after this PR cock-up, RUG/CML should hopefully retire the 'Brilliant Original' crap. And no, Dom, I don't currently plan to go unless I hear from reports that this is something other than the touring version. I certainly don't want my first post-COVID theatre trip to be a lame imitation of a personal favourite.

Even if the pandemic hadn't occured and the tour had gone as planned it would have been brought into London as a replacement when it ended.

That is a certainty given it's what he's done to his other shows. They've just brought it forward so they don't have two prolonged closure periods. The sadness for me is that we didn't get to send off the original.

I'm with Cameron on this. It's business. What artist would paint or play the same thing over and over ad nauseum? Unless Phantom was their real-life muse.
Life moves on - looking forward to seeing the new production.

In particular I love the idea that people do a job because they want to rather than because food doesn't buy itself.

Apparently Cameron does, or he wouldn't keep doing a zillion concert versions of Les Miz or yet another revival of Oliver!.
