I am fairly new to this pocket of musical theatre. The only works I know are Finn's "Elegies" and Pasek & Paul's "Edges". Have any of you come across any good pieces worth checking out? The only other song cycles I've heard of are "Tell Me On A Sunday" and the various Sondheim collections. I am struggling to find any more online. What are your favourites? What do you think of them? Are there any new, fresh faced, composers worth listening to? XXX

Songs for a New World (Jason Robert Brown), Myths & Hymns (Adam Guettel). Personally I love the songs of Ricky Ian Gordon although he edges more towards the classical arena, song cycles such as Rappahannock County, Green Sneakers and Only Heaven. Maury Yeston wrote a song sycle that may not have been staged called December Songs.
I'd say that a song cycle can't have a singular plot so I don't think Tell me on a Sunday counts, it's just a one person musical. Revues such as Edges are accurately termed song cycles if they have some thematic coherence.

In Blood Brothers the Marilyn Monroe songs are good as they just have good significance to it and show how the characters life change.( I.do not know if this is a correct use of song cycles !?)

A song cycle is a collection of songs, without an overt plot, no dialogue but maybe short spoken reflective prose or verse, the songs being connected in some way, maybe by theme, outline (though not fully completed) of a story or stories, compositional techniques, mood and so on. 'Marilyn Monroe' is a leitmotif but, as it is in a song that is repeated, it is also part of a series of reprises. Leitmotif - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leitmotif
