Apologies if there is already a thread but I couldn't see one. Has anyone seen the current Kenwright tour of The Sound of Music? It is coming to Bournemouth soon and I am tempted to go but wanted some opinions first. |

Very average. Climb Every Mountain was ok but the rest... Meh. Lucy O'Byrne was nice enough but lacking in any star quality. However in fairness I saw it when she was in her first week so presumably her confidence has increased by now and she *might* be amazing.
Rolf was played with a degree of camp I've rarely seen before. And believe me, I've seen a lot of camp.
Sets and design were ok. I just found the whole thing a bit flat.

Every time Rolf appears on screen everyone barks. Every time The Baroness appears, they hiss. People wave their plastic Edelweiss. There are curtain swatches.

Yes I've been to that here in Manc. Lots of people (fellas) dressed as nuns, quelle surprise! Someone even dressed up as my favourite character, the Frauline who keeps bowing at the prize giving lol. The props are cute |

When I went with my sister they has the actual Frederick and Louisa from the film there doing a Sound of Music book signing.
The whole ting was introduced by a transvestite who by its own admission, had nothing to do with Salzburg or The Sound of Music and some was (unbelievably) dressed as a mountain and another was dressed as a goat herder.

When I went to it in Sheffield somebody came dressed as the bit of the car the nuns remove at the end! It is a wonderfully silly night out.

I've worked this Sing-A-Longa several times, and it's great fun. I never fail to be amazed at the costumes the audience turn up in. Lots of bearded nuns, and quite where all the authentic Nazi uniforms come from I'm not sure... My favourites have been a family who came as a mountain range, wearing a duvet cover painted green with holes in for their heads to go through, and a very inspired lady who came as everything in 'My Favourite Things', wearing a white dress with a blue satin sash, with everything else hanging off it, including a copper kettle, stuffed toy pony, Sara Lee apple strudel box, and a doorbell on her head! We also had a rather enthusiastic gentleman dressed in a perfect replica of the 'I Have Confidence' costume, including hat, carpet bag and guitar case, who danced down the aisle lipsynching during the song. Sadly he had to be restrained and dragged back to his seat by the ushers as he tried to climb over the orchestra pit and get onto the stage... |

I'm assuming that it is the Kenwright tour that is on sale for the New Alexandra Theatre, Birmingham's website for 16-20 January 2018 (as it lists no other information), even though it went to the Hippodrome last year.

That will be Neil McDermott who played Rolf in original revival cast of SoM at the Palladium, Jean-Michel in La Cage at the Menier, Lord Farquaard in Shrek at Drury Lane and most recently Chief Weasel in Wind in the Willows at the Lowry and the Palladium. |
