Hi guys. I just wanted to ask what anyone's thoughts were on the Madness 'Our House' musical for those who've seen it? It's probably my favorite musical, but I don't see it discussed a lot

One of the best jukebox musicals of all time. You could really believe the songs were written specifically for that story.
The automated constantly folding set in London was magnificent. Sadly the UK tour set was something of a comedown after that. (And I think there was a more recent even cheaper tour that got cancelled).
But the original - superb. I’d love to see a decent revival!

A “jukebox” musical that the term really doesn’t do justice to. This is a “proper” musical whose songs were just waiting to be brought together. The team behind the original production were first class. The staging, the performances, the choreography… it was all perfect.

One of my favourite shows ever. Would love to see it back with Michael Jibson as the dad (I know it won’t happen).

One of my all time favourites - it’s such a great show, I saw the original many times and it’s never been bettered. As others have said, calling it a jukebox musical is almost a disservice as it was constructed in such a way that you could believe that the songs had been written specifically for that story. And the staging was brilliant - especially the big numbers, with The Sun and the Rain being a highlight. The cast and band brought the energy and I just remember leaving the theatre on an absolute high. The petition for a revival starts here!

And the quick change behind the umbrellas!

I think it was the first, if not one of the first, musicals I saw in the west end and I thought it was great. Had a proper storyline which is rare for jukebox musicals.

A superb show, superbly directed. Long overdue for a reboot.

I always think of this as the king of the jukebox musicals. It deserves a revival and an update. I think it would be more relevant if the crime that starts the chain of events was to do with knife crime rather than vandalism as in the original version to be more of the moment.

I love the original production. Such a clever blending of music and situation.
I think it would be wrong to make it more modern and gritty would risk undermining the charm of the piece.
Knife crime would be too dark for my taste. He is a bad lad but not that bad.
But a revival would be most welcome

Despite winning an Olivier award for best new musical
It closed after only 10 months
And wasn’t a hit

Knife crime would be too dark for my taste. He is a bad lad but not that bad. But a revival would be most welcome I meant along the lines of: he is given a knife to carry by someone else against his wishes. Then at the bench he could get stopped and searched by a police officer where he would try and run or the officer would get hurt (but not badly) in a scuffle. Nothing more than that. I say this because on a re-watch of the BBC pro shot I thought the vandalism bit was so tame compared what real London teenagers are up to these days. The ASBO plot is very Tony Blair.

Definitely the best jukebox musical ever! Glad you brought this up. The original was stunning and the first tour with Steve Brookstein very good, but sadly it all went downhill after that. Subsequent tours were lazy with poor casting, staging etc and it eventually lost its charm and magic for me. But I’ll sign the petition to bring back the original!

There is a very good pro shot of the original (I have it on DVD, how quaint)

Me too - it was originally shown on BBC3 I think. I assume that having TV production company Tiger Aspect as one of the producers of the stage show helped grease the wheels with getting it filmed and on air….

Just to prove the exception to the rule - I saw this at the Cambridge Theatre and hated it. I genuinely cannot understand the love shown to the show. Probably doesn't help that I am not a Madness fan - nor particularly anti-madness music. Saw a second production (it was local and cheap) but did not change my mind.

I saw the NYMT production of Our House at Southeark Elephant a couple of months ago and it was my favourite "college" musical so far this year. Well deserving of a revival. Page 17 of the college musicals thread refers ( NYMT are apparently relocating to.Birmingham for 2025 by the way)

I loved the original at the Cambridge and really liked the 2017 tour. His choreography in that tour was allegedly what put Fabian Aloise on Jamie Llyods radar!

I saw it with Steve Brookstein in (must have been the tour, I'd probably have seen it in Wimbledon) and was my least favourite musical for a long time.

It is a wonderful show and it has to be said that Madness are brilliant live and well worth seeing in concert.

It is a wonderful show and it has to be said that Madness are brilliant live and well worth seeing in concert. I agree, went to the 2018 tour and now hoping to see them when they’re next on. As for Our House, I’ve only seen the BBC recording so would love to see it revived as it is a great show and story. I agree that it may need a bit of updating in some areas as it has been 20+ years since the original, but would love to see a decent sized production. Especially with the quick change illusion effects, which I believe the Guinness World Record originally set by Michael Jibson was recently beaten by the lead in a student production if I’m not mistaken.
