"The Cat and the Canary" is the final production in the theatre's main summer season. As a schoolgirl, I watched on TV the 1939 film version of this comedy-thriller with Bob Hope and Paulette Goddard and loved it. This is a very free adaptation by Carl Grose of the original play by John Willard, performed by the Told By An Idiot company.
I'll admit that I laughed out loud several times. However, in all the camping up the comedy, I felt that the suspense - and much of the plot - was lost. If you enjoy the slapstick humour of "The Play That Goes Wrong" then it probably is for you. If you are hoping to see a gripping comedy-thriller, then you will probably feel a tad disappointed.
