I saw this yesterday at the Turbine Theatre with a heavily discounted ticket. It is a short musical, I'd say a 55 minute running time, but we had a show stop due to technical sound difficulties and a repeated song, so it overran a bit.
It's a cast of seven people - four contestants (it's the one hour TV programme format), plus a producer, camera operator, and sound operator. There is a lot of audience interaction with the crew, so if you sit at the front or on an aisle, be prepared to discuss your alcohol consumption. Daniele Coombe is really on form with all the improvisation. She even covered the show stop masterfully. There are a few other strong performers in the cast, including the always brilliant Sophie Hutchinson.
This isn't comparable with something like the Bake Off Musical in terms of development or capturing the show. There isn't much of a set and it is much more about the production drama than the show itself. Really, I think they bring all they can out of the concept without making major changes. Many of the audience sounded like they were massive fans of the TV show (at least based on the responses during the pre-show). It's great that the Turbine Theatre always support new musicals and this is worth watching on a cheap ticket, but I wouldn't expect to see a West End transfer in the current short form.
