I didn’t know which thread to put this on so I thought I would put it in general chat. I’m planning my annual London trip for 30th October to 1st November this year and wanted some show recommendations. The shows set in stone for me to watch are Lehman trilogy on the Wednesday evening and guys and dolls for the Thursday afternoon. I was thinking of seeing moulin rouge and Oedipus, but any recommendations would be welcome! I’m a big play and musical love and would watch anything. Would love to hear your recommendations! Thanks very much

Well, I would have recommended Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York) but that would have closed by then.

Either of the three NT plays - Coriolanus, The Other Place or A Tupperware of Ashes - may suit, as all three have the potential to be very solid productions (I'm most hopeful for The Other Place, which has a brilliant cast.)
Giant at the Royal Court seems like it will also be unmissable; The Buddha of Suburbia (dir. Emma Rice) got excellent reviews at the RSC and is at the Barbican. If you can get tickets, Tennant's Macbeth is at the Pinter, and Adrien Brody is in The Fear of 13 at the Donmar. Plus, The Duchess looks good at the Trafalgar if you like modern versions of classics (like Oedipus.)
In terms of a musical, The Devil Wears Prada will be new in-town, A Face in the Crowd will have started at the Young Vic, and Hadestown/Cabaret are still running.

Thanks very much Could you give people some examples of shows you’ve loved or genres you have an interest in so that we know a bit more about your preferences? “I would watch anything” is making it very broad and quite hard to give meaningful recommendations.

I’m going with my mum who’s 56, but we both love light hearted musical like mamma Mia and &Juliet. On the play side we both really enjoyed for black boys and other darker and thoughtful plays. Hope that’s not too vague and helpful!
