I don't blame it on the cast. Her wot's out of SCD has been directed to play it "panto" presumably. The whole cast have. It's almost cartoon-ish but not in a cool Dick Tracy movie kind of way. It's just naff. The set looked great at first sight, but after 3 hours of it I never want to see silver painted MDF fretwork again. IT NEVER CHANGED. Speaking of running time, what is supposed to be snappy, sassy dialogue is delivered with such leaden bad timing that you can hear tumbleweed between the jokes.
The longest most overplayed drunk scene in the history of theatre. I thought it would never end. So cringe that I had to look down at my feet a few times. Deadful. Don't even get me started on the "Flied Lice And Plawn Clacka" stuff. Wow. I mean, I can do non-PC jokes till the cows come home... IF THEYRE FUNNY.
The book is a mess and there's barely a memorable tune in the whole thing.
Avoid.

In Pret right now and half of the Millie cast are here between shows! They haven't influenced what I'm about to write!
I must admit I approached this with pretty low expectations this afternoon after the mauling our resident bear gave it earlier in the week but those expectations have been confounded. I really enjoyed it!
It's not perfect but it is great fun, just what Manchester needs this week of all weeks. I didn't seem to be alone in that view either. Very responsive audience and a full standing ovation at the end. I'm guessing that such a response might not be the norm because the cast, particularly Joanne Clifton and Katherine Glover, looked absolutely chuffed to bits and a bit overwhelmed at the sight of the entire audience on their feet at the end.
Speaking of Joanne Clifton, boy can she sing! Very impressed. So glad I got to see Lucas Rush too rather than being subjected to Michelle Collins as Mrs Meers. I have to mention Katherine Glover as well, she was hilarious and sang beautifully as Dorothy Brown.
Heartfelt words at the end about the Manchester terror attack (I took the time to visit the memorial at St Ann's Square before the show which was such a moving sight to behold).
With feel-good songs like Forget About The Boy, great choreography and lots of laughs, Millie turned out to be well worth a visit after all. Love it when a show totally defies my expectations like that!

Plenty of empty seats at the Bristol Hippodrome today, however the audience, myself included, loved the show. I don't think there is a weak link in the show, however the standouts for me were Katherine Glover, Jenny Fitzpatrick and Lucas Rush who was hilarious as Mrs Meers.

I went to the matinee yesterday in Newcastle. I wasn't exactly sure what I was expecting from this show - but it wasn't that! I thought it was very strange, particularly Mrs Meers and the screen having to translate large parts (I won't say any more in order to avoid possible spoilers). I usually prefer shows set in more recent times, but the tap dancing in this appealed to me - I had thought there would have been more of that. I thought Joanne was very good though. I half thought about leaving in the interval (which I've only ever done once) but stayed in the hope the second half would be better - and with more tap dancing. It wasn't quite as bad as the first half. I was told the theatre was pretty much sold out and everyone around me seemed to enjoy it as there was a standing ovation at the end.

Nobody for me can compare with the definitive Amanda Holden. Talk about the leading lady of British musical theatre?! No contest.
Her tight dancing, powerhouse vocals and tremendous stage presence is unparalleled and I'm astonished they even bothered to tour it without her.

I'm struggling to think of a drunk scene that could be stretched out by 15 minutes. Are you sure they weren't just drunk?

What scene is this now... It was in Act 2. Trevor Graydon is in a bar drowning his sorrows over unrequited love for Dorothy, Millie and Jimmy are there and it becomes this extended falling down scene with lots of fake corpsing. It went on so long I couldn't actually watch it any longer and had to look down at the floor. The audience weren't even laughing that much but the actors played it like they were lapping it up, and milked it even more. It was hideous |

I know there's little to no interest in this on the board, but just as an FYI in case anyone has or knows someone who has tickets, I'm pretty sure this tour has been pulled. No idea how much longer left on the road they had but a friend who is in the show posted something on facebook along the lines of "loads of love to my millie cast" which has now disappeared, but neither the twitter account or show website seem to exist anymore. Shame if true, sad for the cast. Not sure who the producer is but I know the show was done on the cheap.

That's a shame, I saw this in Sunderland and the only reason I didn't post was because I couldn't find a thread. While the storyline is a bit cooky I actually enjoyed it. Also that means one of my favourite actors is unemployed, which is a bit sad.

Meant to open in Bradford tomorrow but now no mention at all on website or twitter.
Like it didn't exist! You'd think there would be a note for ticket holders. How strange!

It would appear fron cast member's tweets and the website and twitter disappearing this closed in Bath on Saturday without anyone involved knowing. Which is awfully sad.

‘We are extremely sorry to have to announce the cancellation of the UK tour of Thoroughly Modern Millie.
This has been caused by lower ticket sales than expected, which in turn has put the company producing the show in financial difficulties and they are no longer able to continue with the tour. The show was wonderful, and received excellent reviews as it toured the UK, but despite this, ticket sales were not strong enough to maintain the viability of the show. Our hearts go out to the brilliant cast of the show, who sang and danced their hearts out to bring Thoroughly Modern Millie to audiences all over the country. Sadly, and regretfully, the show is now cancelled.
We are extremely sorry for the inconvenience and disappointment this cancellation will cause everyone who was planning on seeing the show.’
Bradford Theatres are working hard to notify their customers and provide full refunds to those who had booked to see the show. Bradford Theatres apologises for any inconvenience caused and thanks customers for their patience during this process.
