A jokey comment on another thread made me think (and this is my first thread so apologies if I've posted it in the wrong place!)
I know they are often the cause of eye-rolling these days, but what material (film/TV show/book) do you think is RIPE for musical adaptation that hasn't been touched yet?
Personally, I've always thought there's a really fun musical in the film Drop Dead Fred... Although I guess it would be similiar-ish to Beetlejuice. I bet David Yazbek or Tim Minchin could write a killer score for that.
Any thoughts?

The two I have the most concrete idea for where I can literally see at what points songs could slot in are the Park Chan-wook film The Handmaiden, and the Powell and Pressburger film I Know Where I'm Going.

Mine would be super drippy overwrought Christopher Reeve/Jane Seymour 80’s time travel romance ‘Somewhere in Time’. Apparently a musical was created in the early 90’s but only ran for 3 weeks. Set ALW at it with his best Puccini hat on and the melodies could be swoonsome.

I know it has been tried before but I think the Mapp and Lucia stories would make a great chamber musical. Lots of fun period pastiche combined with memorable characters and wonderful catty lyrics/dialogue.
We have some fantastic older MT stars who would be fab in it.

It's out of copyright now which saves a lot of hassle.i can just imagine a set made up of Georgie's watercolour sketches.
A vocal setting of the Moonlight called Un Po di Mu
And a reprise of Au Reservoir to end Act 2.
Yes, it would have to be a passion project. But theatre is all about passion.

Miss Congeniality forever and always I'm surprised Warner Bros hasn't never considered it for a stage adaptation, there would have to be a few changes but I think there is potential for a stage musical version to work. My Big Fat Greek Wedding is one I've always thought it would a good musical. |

Red, White and Royal Blue - cautious on this one as the movie is soooo good and the leads chemistry is insane. But musical theatre really could do with better and more diverse gay representation that doesn't mostly rely on stereotypes and cheap laughs

I’d love to see a truly dark production of The Sound of Music. The threat of the Nazis invading your country to the point you have to leave everything and flee, that’s a very dark turn of events. I don’t want a dystopian style production, just something where the initial joy and sugary sweetness start to give way to the anxiety everyone must have felt during that time.
