Was anyone there tonight? Loved this. Strong, talented cast and Zheng Xi Yong playing Kosei - mid show standing ovation for his beautiful classical piano.
Hit all the right emotional notes for me. I hope this show will be developed into a full production and have further life. Try and grab a ticket for this tomorrow if you can.
Oh and the sound was great 😉

I'm also at the matinee today (Hi,Tom !)
I've also booked to see With All Our Hearts charity gala concert at the Adelphi tonight. Don't think we have a thread for that but it seems to be a new work written by Rob Madge celebrating 75 years of the NHS. Cast includes Marisha Wallace, Alfie Boe, Tom Francis, Aimee Atkinson and Rob himself.

Took my daughter to the matinee, she cried at the end!
The cast was faultless.
We both really enjoyed the show but (personally) I think if the Producers bring anything in as a full show it should be Death Note!

I know nothing about Manga, but can this sustain a 12 week run in the West End with a cast of unknowns? Good luck to them, but it seems a little niche to me.

I have the feeling it's probably a live cast album or a proshot. YLIA doesn't have the name recognition of something like Death Note in that niche venn diagram of musical lovers and otaku (people who are fans of anime and manga) that I somehow land in. Death Note is WAY more likely to get a fully staged production.
(An aside, but the general vibe of the people seeing the Death Note concert, specifically the first night at the Palladium made me think it was more otaku than solely musical theatre lovers, not to say it was just that but that seemed the majority, considering the amount of people dressing up like it was a twisted Rocky Horror XD)
The fact the YLIA concert was so staged makes me think they did that so if it was filmed it was something satisfactory for release. I love the "Manga Musicals" if that's what we're calling Wildhorn's selections  But they have way more staying power in Japan, as probably expected. Musical theatre is very different over there... |

People about to underestimate Japanese arts and culture popularity again I'm a big supporter of Japanese arts and culture and have written before how happy I was/am to see things like My Neighbor Totoro and Spirited Away turn up in London and the Death Note concerts. Your Lie in April may be a popular manga/anime, but nowhere near the cult status of Death Note or the Ghibli Movies. The concerts didn't cause half the stir and attention that the Death Note concerts did. So I think it's not wrong to question how this is supposed to sustain a longer run or why they chose this above the much better known Death Note. They might hope to ride the coat tails of Spirited Away, which will indubitably draw many fans of Japanese anime to London this summer. But I'm not convinced this has legs for 12 weeks. |

I didn't get to see Death Note, but with Your Lie In April being a show about music, it is perfectly suited to be a musical.

I think this probably has more cross over appeal being a romance than Death note.
Opening in summer at the peak of tourist season will help it too.
Asian tv and film are very popular on streaming too so that could also carry over into theatre.
Not saying it'll be a guaranteed sell out but it's not a headscratcher of an idea either.

Oh wow I stand corrected I'll be seeing it. I'm not gonna complain!! I think they'll be hoping people will see it even without knowledge of the source material. I think with proper advertising, and appropriate word of mouth, this'll do fine I'm REALLY excited!! |
