The iPhone was on shuffle and played Every Story Is a Love Story (Aida) followed by No One Mourns the Wicked (Wicked). And it occurred to me that these two shows have practically identical scenes, song orders and characters. Humor me, and yes clearly I gave this way too much thought than needed. EVERY STORY IS A LOVE STORY vs NO ONE MOURNS THE WICKED (and finale) Amneris and Glinda get two very striking entrances, as mummy coming to life in a museum exhibit, and as the patron saint of Munchkinland in bubble, respectively, and they both give the viewers historical context (Egypt usurping Nubia vs Elphaba's childhood). We then get into flashback in both shows. At the end, both women appear as they did at the top of Act 1 and reprise the same song they sang. ELPHABA vs AIDA Elphaba vs Aida: Both are extremely sharp, witty and their skin color puts them at a disadvantage. They both have a messed up relationship with their fathers. GLINDA vs AMENERIS Both spoiled, privileged, superficial blonde bimbos who have been changed by their female friend, grow up and mature into leaders. They both lose out on their love interest to their smart best friend. POPULAR vs STRONGEST SUIT It's practically the same song. ENDING Both characters don't technically die (despite their certain demise in the original texts of both shows). Elphaba fakes her melton, and Aida is reincarnated. Please! Elton John's score is the worst element in a very mediocre show. And I saw it with the amazing Heather Headley, Sherie Rene Scott and Adam Pascal - even they couldn't make it sound interesting.

For me, the book was the worst part. Deborah Cox and the cast came to life during the songs, but nothing could save the book scenes. ZZZZZZzzzzzzz..............
And Deborah Cox's dance remix of Easy As Life has SO many good memories for me!

Aida the musical is just the best and ran five years in Broadway and was very popular for years in Germany. I still just don't get why it skipped the UK in every form from fringe to amateur to major production!

I still just don't get why it skipped the UK in every form from fringe to amateur to major production! It's been available to amateurs for some years, and I group I was a member of did it (before I was a member) |

It ran for 5 years because they kept putting big names into the show; Toni Braxton, Deborah Cox, Michelle Williams, Taylor Dane and other known names in the male roles. The show is a bore IMO. And David Hasslehoff was huge in Germany.... |

Aida was also one of my guilty pleasures. Saw the german tour several (others would say far too many) times. But to my excuse, I just had a five minute walk from my appartment to the theatre and the student discounts were very generous back then.

I still just don't get why it skipped the UK in every form from fringe to amateur to major production! I was lucky enough to see an amateur production at the ADC in Cambridge. It was the best amateur production I have ever seen and one of the few shows at which I've been first on my feet with a standing ovation. I loved it and was sobbing by the end. I haven't come across any other productions, which is a shame. |

I love the score. But having revisited a few weeks ago, the book/dialogue is embarrassingly amateur level. It's a great show with an awesome score if they were to rewrite the book. Surprised there hasn't been a reunion type concert from it.

I bloody love Aida. I re-discover it every few years and enjoy the admittedly cheesy score all over again. I never saw it alas.
I loved Wicked when it first opened but think I got Wicked fatigue, and don't think I could sit through it again now. So on that basis my 'guilty pleasure' wins

I've got a soft spot for Aida as it's the very first show I saw on Broadway. For cheesiness though you really can't beat the studio album with the likes of Shania Twain, Boyz II Men and The Spice Girls......

I'd say it's Aida for me too! I do / did like Wicked but I've seen and heard it so much more than Aida I'd like to see a new production of Aida.

Im a huge Wicked fan, and it is one of my favourite shows ever (judge all you like!) but I LOVE the score to Aida. A Step Too Far and Easy As Life are incredible songs.
