As it's coming from Elon's version of Twitter, sorry to say, I'm not surprised. Most of the people moaning are bottom feeders living in the dark ages. All those people were there before Elon too - in fact it has 32 million fewer users since he took over.

Lol, as if Twitter was some paragon of virtue before he took over. Twitters always been a nasty place.
But I've seen those comments on Instagram and Facebook too so it's not just a twitter thing.

This sounds alarmingly like diversification of opinion. Mao Zedong will be spinning in his Mausoleum.

The things I’ve seen about her I awful omg. There was one Twitter post calling her ugly with like 35k likes. Also getting abuse on her own instagram page. Gosh. Our theatre actors aren’t celebrities who are used to getting abuse all the time. This must be awful for her

Here's the law. If Jamie Lloyd believes there has been "deplorable racial abuse" he has a duty of care to his worker to report it:

I didn't even know about the racist comments until I saw the above statement, and then I started looking- OMG. People are awful aren't they. I can't believe this is still happening, in 2024. I feel sick.

Had an email from LoveTheatre saying more seats have been released to them… front centre of the Dress Circle… £275.00!!! ARe they ticket resellers like stubhub or are they a legitimate theater organization where by paying that crazy amount one can think of it as a donation to their company. But deep down -- are these real legitimate tickets? I ask because I'll be in London in late May and might actually buy one ticket as long as it's a real ticket (unfortunately I'm not eligible for the 25 pound tickets.)

Lovetheatre.com is a completely legitimate arm of ATG, the primary ticket sellers.
Those are not resale tickets. Lovetheatre.com is typically used by ATG to farm off either higher-priced tickets or lower-priced offers.

Was covered on ITV London News. A dislike of more modern casting is quite widespread and os often seen by people as quota casting but outright abusing someone is obviously a massive step futher ans is vile.

This slow drip ticket release is an art form: press 'Max Rinse', and repeat: and now he gets a - completely coincidental - hit on regional tv news.
Can never be said Jamie Lloyd is frightened of a pound note.

I'm also cynical of ATG's ticketing schemes, but I sincerely do not think this scandal is correlated to publicity or sales. Francesca is a typical pick for Lloyd's productions, in that she's a talented and rising star, who seems to fit the role very well. It is incredibly unlikely - as you appear to be implying - that she was picked to stir controversy. I also do not get the sense that JLC's press release is designed to attract press coverage, although I don't dispute that it will come - instead, it was born of genuine necessity, as the online hate has been quite severe. Part of me wonders if Lloyd will incorporate this into his production - either seriously, through exploring the implications of casting an interracial Romeo and Juliet, with commentary on themes of racism and bigotry, or with a meta-comment, as in the Act 2 opener of Sunset.

I wasn't thinking of the Juliet role, or any individual. I thought the cast in general might well create comment on social media/SM because it's what SM does.
I guess my point here is that the slow drip of ticketing does not happen in isolation. It comes with a slow press of SM buttons through information release and while you don't know what, where or when that might burst out on SM, you maintain the slow press ...
That drone story, right. Just popped out of no where + new ticket release.

The utterly horrible comments online have genuinely angered me so much and made me feel quite a lot in a short space of time . If this production weren't sold out I would definitely be supporting them in buying a ticket.

Calling Romeo and Juliet 'quota casting' is eye rolling considering that last year the Almeida production had similar casting and no one bat an eyelid.

You’re not far off with that one! People have been looking at roof access at the theatre. Well it's very easy to get onto the roof of the Garrick from the DOY, not so sure about the DOYs roof though.

So sad what has happened to the young actress getting a dream role. There have been many productions of this play with the families cast as many diverse races that I can recall so it's not like some "virtue"casting. The show is being sold on Tom's name so I don't see the issue of who they cast opposite him being a major concern as long as they have chemistry.

Don't think I would equate the Almeida and Globe too closely with a West End production by Jamie Lloyd starring Spiderman.

Don't think I would equate the Almeida and Globe too closely with a West End production by Jamie Lloyd starring Spiderman. Tom’s casting makes it higher profile and therefore more likely to get people who don’t go to the theatre frothed up. So, we all know that this type of casting is common, but they don’t.

On X, some of these people are convinced its a Disney film, some of them think that Juliet was real, some of them are white supremacists.
All of them seem to want Shakespeare's original vision without realising that the only thing we know for sure about Juliet from Shakespeare is that she's 13 YEARS OLD and Romeo fancies her. Bet they'd be up in arms if they got that!
Bet they don't realise Shakespeare himself would have cast a bloke! They'd probably be up in arms if they got that too.
These sorts of insults don't tend to succeed in achieving anything anyway, as the backlash is usually stronger. I remember how The Sun called Jade Goody a "pig," an "oinker," and "a hippo," and in the end the backlash to their barrage of insults lifted Jade Goody higher on a tide of public sympathy than she ever would have been without the insults in the first place.
I hope Francesca Amewudah-Rivers becomes an even bigger superstar than she otherwise would have been.
