So now the 2023 panto has come to an end then it is time to start speculating about what will be the panto later this year. There was a few members speculating that it would be sleeping beauty - the panto landing page has been updated to a purple background with gold lettering very similar to the colour scheme used for other versions of Sleeping Beauty produced byCrossroads. palladiumpantomime.com/Logo / colour scheme here www.pantomime.com/venues/darlington

Possibly, but I think Pinocchio in Newcastle used a similar sparkly purple background this year and I wouldn't be surprised if that came to London with Julian Clary as Jiminy Cricket. Plus you've got Paul Zerdin with a built-in puppet act. It practically writes itself!

Many different pantos have had that this year aside from Sleeping Beauty. I’ve always understood that they choose the title based on what name they can get. There was a very strong rumour the year they did Goldilocks that it would be Mother Goose but their choice, Sir Ian Mckellen, didn’t happen. Realistically, at thus stage in the year, I would think they’re at the “bandying names about stage”. Concrete plans ordinarily start to emerge about Easter. Whatever the title is, Paul Zerdin needs some new material. His act hasn’t differed one iota since Cinderella.

Im an American who has of this weekend has see all the Palladium Pantos. Is The Little Mermaid a panto? With Ariel swimming to the surface would fit perfectly with the new ‘exit’ in the Palladium.

A few professional productions have popped up in the last few years, often as a special "easter" or "half-term" panto, but for me it doesn't have that Christmas panto feel to it. Also, my issue with the Little Mermaid as a panto would likely be the same problem I have with Beauty and the Beast as a panto - they'll just rip off the Disney musical version somehow.

Newcastle's 2024 panto is The Little Mermaid funnily enough. I think it'll be a female title this year. Think it'll be Sleeping Beauty or perhaps Robin Hood with a female Robin? Pinocchio went down a storm in Newcastle so I think it'll added to the Crossroads panto canon.

Does it matter what they choose when story and plot seems to be least of their concerns when it comes to execution treating panto like a glorified variety show. It matters to us who live outside of london as we get the fancy physical London production in years after, but we usually get more of the traditional plot. Sleeping Beauty has been in need of a big lavish production for years so it would be good if they do choose that

Sleeping Beauty has been in need of a big lavish production for years so it would be good if they do choose that That's why I've given up on the Palladium panto in the last couple of years and go to ones in the provences which are cheaper and where they respect the traditional storytelling and art form more. I don't mind using a regular company if they do something NEW eg I went to the Canterbury panto this year and although Ben Roddy was the dame again he always does new routines whereas Paul Zenon...... I go to the Canterbury one every year and Ben Roddy's been doing it for a decade now. But they change the cast around him, so he's usually the only person who comes back year on year. Sometimes they bring back a familiar face from a few years ago (e.g Mister Maker this year), but that's rarely consecutive years. And you're right, he has new material each time - there are of course some elements that never change (ghost gag bench, finding a man, certain punchlines), but it always feels fresh because he does them with new people.

I enjoyed Pete Firman in Cinderella at the New Wimbledon Theatre and I think he should be a staple there. There is something to be said for familiarity. One of the most successful pantos near myself is Berwick Kaler in York. They’ve had the sand company for over 30 years but it’s all brand new stuff each time. People go there for the familiarity and the same actors. What they have though, which the palladium doesn’t, is respect for the audience. They just assume people will come back because of the names they have. The whole panto needs a refresh imho. Having Peter Pan where the signature flying effect is Smee and not Peter just because it’s Julian Clary isn’t right.

Interesting to know. I guess they are also able to return investment on things like sets and costumes in future years since it all gets reused once it starts playing regional venues.

There are some who get paid absurd amounts just for the Xmas season all over the country. I've also heard, although I don't know if it's true, that the Palladium panto doesn't actually turn that much in terms of actual profit, and is instead a large cog in the much larger "Crossroads" machine, so that particular production (sets, costumes etc) enters the Crossroads circuit and makes plenty more money down the line for them.

I believe Michael Harrison mentioned in an interview when Qdos/Crossroads first did the Palladium Panto, they didn't expect to make money from it but I imagine they do make a profit even if it's a small one nowadays. I wonder if that's true for the Newcastle panto which has been new shows like Pinocchio last year and The Little Mermaid this year but I imagine the costs are a lot cheaper compared to the Palladium so it's likely they make money.

I have no idea, but Clary gets some kind of writers fee as well I think as he writes all his own material.
I just remember hearing that's what Donny Osmond got, and Dawn French was pretty close to that a couple of years back.
