Really excited to see tickets available for ‘James V: Katherine’, touring in Scotland next spring. I adored the first three in Rona Munro’s James Plays cycle, really enjoyed the fourth installment and can’t wait for the fifth!

Sounds quite different to the earlier plays in the series: Much smaller theatres in more places too: Glasgow, Aberdeen, Tobermory, Inverness, Dunoon, Dunkeld, St Andrews, Stirling, Peebles and Hawick Will need to try to fit this in but I'd already planned a Scottish theatre trip for James Ley's adaptation of Damian Barr's book "Maggie and Me", but that's not in Edinburgh until June. Yes, absolutely! Sounds more like ‘Mary’ which is considered a wider part of the cycle. I didn’t love that - but hoping for more core cycle magic!

Booked for the Tron in Glasgow (the theatre where I saw most of my theatre before I moved to London). Was concerned about it selling out given it's a small theatre but as I recall when I saw J4 in Glasgow at the Theatre Royal it wasn't very well sold. Like you, I wasn't so keen on 'Mary' but enjoyed J4 and hoping the series gets a chance to end properly given that Rona Munro spoke previously about the challenge of getting J4 on-stage (and wondering if that drives the change of approach for J5)

I’m the only person who didn’t like the James plays. Am I? Horses for courses, I suppose! That’s the beauty of theatre to me. We went to see the archive recording of James I at the NT Archive before we saw James IV and, despite the years and theatre trips since, totally stood up for me compared to my memories and how much I loved it first time round. Has anyone seen it tonight and fancies reporting back?! |

Absolutely LOVED that. Had all the hallmarks of a “proper” James play. Great speeches, great dealings with the state of Scotland (both old and new), lots of heart, great funny moments.
I liked the smaller, intimate play but the subject matter would easily have leant itself to something on a more epic scale like the first four.
Performances from the actors playing James and Jenny were particularly strong - he could have been amongst any of the previous King James’.
Really wonderful addition to the series.

I saw James I, II and III at the National, James IV at His Majesty's in Aberdeen and Mary at the Hampstead.
I'd like to see James V travel to England but I'm not too hopeful.

I thought this was really good in Glasgow at the weekend. Once I'd got my head around the fact that this was a very different type of James Play, I enjoyed the cut and thrust of the discussion. Very tight writing and splendid acting, particularly a star turn from Sean Connor as a mercurial James V. Very glad I made the trip, I really hope that Rona Munro gets the opportunity to complete the story.
