I loved this show... What a shame this closes and Thriller is on for 5 years. Showbiz is crazy! I totally agree! I dont know how Thriller or Stomp has lasted this long |

Got day seats for the matinee yesterday and thought this show was great! Really sad it's closing, the show deserved better. The stand out for me was Ian Bartholomew, really thought he was phenomenal and I'm surprised that not that many people are discussing his performance. He's astounding in the song 'Living in a Dream World'. I feel that Olivier shouldv'e gone to Emma Williams. Lara Pulver is really good in Gypsy, but Emma's performance just seemed stronger. Tracie Bennett doesn't have the best vocals, however she is such a good actress it didn't really matter that much. Can understand why people don't like that comedian, but I thought Jamie Foreman did the best with the material he was given. Hopefully the show will have a good touring life!  |

Another visit to this tonight. A small, but incredibly enthusiastic house.
Agree with Hamilton Addict, the show belonged to Ian Bartholomew tonight. I was thoroughly impressed. Tracie Bennett is a star, as is Emma Williams.
My main gripe with the show is it's score. It simply doesn't serve the show properly.

I sort of disagree about the score. I think it does serve the show well in the theatre, but it doesn't impress on its own, as a listening experience, apart from the two best songs, What a Waste of a Moon and If Mountains Were Easy to Climb.

Oddly, I found the reverse, mallardo. The songs didn't land in the theatre for me, but the CD has stood repeated playing. I'm afraid I found it fell apart as a show in the second half, where I thought there was nowhere useful for it to go and I stopped caring very much about any of them.
Hmm. Food for thought. I may have to see it again.

I really must get round to listening to the CD, which I bought just after seeing the show (more to support them rather than out of any great desire to hear the music again) but have yet to listen to. I was editing my recording of this year's Oliviers this evening & listening to Emma Williams' performance again made me think maybe I should try to see the show a second time before it closes. If only there was a bit less nudity - yes, I know nudity is the point but will going a second time look odd...

Two maybe 4 minute female scenes in the first half and some fleeting male nudity (maybe 3 minutes), none at all in the second (fan dance doesn't count as nothing is revealed - ok, literally 2 seconds at the end). I think this is where the show's marketing shoots itself in the foot, they must have thought giving the impression of lots of nudity was a selling point but I'm sure many more people are put off by it than are attracted. Lots of songs about war and growing old though. Cheery stuff. |

But reviews posted by individuals regularly state they were relieved to find there isn't a lot of nudity and/or what there is is tasteful. So clearly some folks are apprehensive and some probably are put off completely. But whatever it is (and there are other factors I'm sure) something is keeping people away in their droves. |

"Put off" by beautiful nude women? On what planet? I'm not very keen on nudity anywhere in public. I think the human body looks better clothed. And as a straight female seeing other women naked is a bit pointless. I admit that in this show we do get equal opportunities nudity as the men strip off too but I'd rather gaze at Matthew Malthouse & Samuel Holmes clothed. |

Rather enjoyed this last night... Old fashioned, and quite charming, although not really deserving of the (now obligatory) standing ovation it received at the end. I can see why it's not taken off; it's just not West End, and that's not meant to sound in any way unkind or condescending. I missed some of the film subplots which had been erazed from the show, but it was well acted, danced and sung by a talented cast, despite the fact that some of the tunes weren't up to much. A handsome young man (great singer and dancer) showed us his bottom which was rather nice and included in the price of the ticket. Tracie Bennett is a versatile performer, but I have to say she was completely wrong for this. Not mumsy enough, and her speaking and singing voice were far too harsh. (What's the story there? I know Janie Dee was originally announced, although she too wouldn't have been ideal casting in my opinion..)
Overall, a pleasant evening, and a nice one to catch on a special offer if you are around in London over the next month or so...

It's not that people aren't drawn by nudity, it's that they don't want people to *know* they're drawn by the nudity. That's where the reticence comes in - you're worried people will think you're going multiple times to look at the nudity, even though you're a fan of the performers or love the score or whathaveyou.
