Absolutely adored this yesterday. It’s running about 2h20m (with a 20 minute interval). Both Dujonna Gift and Sam Tutty delivered throughout; it was hysterical one minute and had us wiping away the tears the next.
The book is well written, keeping us intrigued and giving just enough to allow you to fill in the gaps. Loved the score too; in my opinion the strongest numbers have already been released, but the additional numbers hold their own and move the story along nicely.
Hoping this gets an extension, would love to see it again on a return trip in August, with this pairing.

It's often worth seeing if there's a Teachers' Pack on a show website; download it for free and you often get better photos, articles and information than in the costly programme (usually no cast biogs), and it doesn't take up shelf space at home. |

We are booked for matinee on 22 June - Row E - and then realized, oops, it's West End Live - will we get Tutty and Gift. I asked the Criterion box office and they replied that there were no current plans for them to be off on 22 June and that, if they were to perform at West End Live, it likely would be Sunday.

That's a pretty short extension. I wonder if it is one of these shows that does lots of short extensions or if there is something shedule conflict stopping a further extension?

Just saw this - I can definitely see why it’s climbed the West End ladder so meteorically!
My feelings were at first mixed when I figured out it was a cast of two; the last two-person show I saw was Before/After at the Southwark Playhouse which really struggled to maintain narrative momentum. Thankfully, the two eponymous strangers in this show have the advantage of being likeable people who convincingly like each other. I initially preferred Dougal but really grew to appreciate Robyn as the show progressed. “Straight-laced straight-woman” is an archetype that can easily feel “token” but the book has a canny knack for introducing new dimensions to her character right when you think you’ve got her pegged.
I was impressed by how naturally it felt like these two were in the middle of a bustling city despite being alone on stage. All the off-stage shouts and one-sided phone calls might feel contrived in the hands of a less capable team, but prior to the interval it didn’t even occur to me. The set also contributes; I love when simple set pieces reveal new ways to be utilised even after two uninterrupted hours on stage!
Wasn’t a big fan of the tunes. Like, I found a few of the choruses catchy, but even after re-listening to the songs currently released I struggle to “get into” them. But the lyrics are fantastic, striking a balance between laugh-out-loud funny and achingly sad that doesn’t undermine either side. Oh, and I loved how integrated the songs were to the book; the characters hop from song to dialogue and back again but it’s always cohesive and intentional.
9/10. A wonderful little show!

Saw this last night and it was a great evening of fun musical theatre. The Criterion is a fantastic venue and one of those theatres that it feels exciting just to enter!
The show is paced perfectly. Can tell a lot of work has gone into that aspect and it pays off. Being a two hander, the actors certainly have to work, but never feel rushed. Although that is also a testament to their incredible skills.
The upbeat songs are catchy, hummable, fun, and the sadder songs are well written, suited to the characters and placed in the show at the perfect times.
It's a rare show that makes you as interested in the characters referenced and never shown. The Dad, the sister, the Mum, all feel real and fleshed out, never simple caricatures or stereotypes. That's a sign of fantastic writing.
Would recommend this to anyone. Sam and Dujonna have such a natural charisma that nobody could resist being won over by this. Shout out to the set and lighting design, which is everything that great musical theatre should be.

I have tongive praise to the way the Criterian send out their e tickets. You get the e tickets in advance by e mail but they also send you a text on the day with a link straight to your e ticket.
As I book so many shows in advance I often find myself scrolling up and down my e mails trying to find the right e mail outside the theatre but with the text in the morning it's so much easier.

I have just had my second visit to this show and its still wonderful. The pacing is so well done that even though you only actually meet the two characters it still felt like you'd been across a busy city. New York appears to be permanently stuck in the brain now.
Lighting, sound and set were all incredibly well judged for this production.

I absolutely adored this little show. Perfect balance of funny, joyous, gritty and moving. Very catchy / witty songs. Its two performers are superb both individually and together. The transforming suitcase set and the revolve were brilliantly used. Easily five stars. I'm seeing nominations (if not wins) for Best MT actor/actress and new musical everywhere this coming awards season.
