Let people enjoy it without the incessant need to repeat your dislike for the production, over and over. It always comes down to this on this board. The people who love a show try to shout down those who don’t. There is no discussion because people “must be left to enjoy it” (whatever that means!). Personally it doesn’t bother me either way. There’s a few posters who have returned three or more times to other threads (such as My Neighbour Totoro, which I loved) to repeat that they hated it or various reasons. It’s their opinion and they’re entitled to it. Sometimes good discussion comes from countering points made both for and against a show. Moderators have it under control, he’s said many times nobody here is being silenced unless it breaches the rules of use here, which disagreeing both for or against doesn’t. Seems fair to me really.

This production has many delightful moment. Seeing Nicole was the highlight of my trip. Jamie Lloyd’s direction work on the surface. He’s a stager. While at uni I had a similar professor who directed a successful play off-Broadway that ran over 3 years. The use of film is brilliant. Asking an audience to imagine the missing props didn’t work for me. At my performance audience members were on their phones at the top as the lack of activity could not hold there attention. Lloyd creates dynamic moments and that’s worth our praise. What is lacking for me, is complimentary support. I probably will see it again on Broadway.

I've seen a lot of people record the bows, like I know so many people do. But does anyone know if Savoy allow it? Wouldn't want to be breaking any rules!

Reading the comments about the particular type of "over-acting" / "hamming up" that this latest Norma employs, and seeing it regarded as being in the manner of affectations in previous versions, such as Swanson's in the movie, makes me wonder how many silent movies Jamie Lloyd or many of the commentators here have actually seen, if they think they are in any way comparable.
I'd have thought one thing that could be agreed upon is that JL has stripped all essence of silent cinema from his interpretation.

I'm not sure he has - he uses the eyes, light, dark, shadow to great effect. This is juxtaposed with more contemporary directorial techniques and choices which make this work both contemporary and befitting the silent movie genre.

Also appears that ATG Productions haven't copyright claimed any of them on youtube, unlike any of the bootleg clips that have surfaced so far. So seems that ATG aren't taking an issue with it.

Has anyone noticed what time this has been finishing for an evening performance recently? I'm going again next Wednesday and just found out my nice comfy 23:05 train has been cancelled! (I know it’s live theatre and could differ anyway but trying to get an idea of being ready to dash for the 22:30 or saunter to the 23:30!) Finished last night at 22:07 and I had to dash to get the 22:30 from Waterloo - so missed the curtain calls! Fortunately I was on the end of a row. PS.What’s the young Norma standing on stage for 10 minutes before it starts all about? My understanding from some sources is that they are waiting for NS most evenings… it has caused quite a stir amongst the cast

Most of the delays have been caused by clearance being given so late because of how long it takes the audience to get in.
They were still getting through the queue at 7:32 earlier this week. Nothing to do with Nicole.

It’s such a rabbit warren of a theatre that getting anywhere in it takes forever, I think the only way that it would be able to start on the dot of 7.30pm would be to tell the audience they have to be in the theatre by 7.20pm or they’re not getting in, close the bars at that time as well and literally frog march people to their seats. Which would be a sh*t general atmosphere to start a show with.

Nothing to do with Nicole. This happened on the night I went to see it. The Savoy is TERRIBLE for ingress when numbers reach any decent volume. People were still faffing around finding their seats at 7.29. When I saw it the first time Young Norma came on by 7.25 at the latest (possibly earlier) and just did her thing for the final few minutes of this "pre show" before the show started proper. When I saw it on the 9th, they didn't bring her on until everyone was seated and all the auditorium doors were closed. It was very different. has anyone else experienced this variation? @bvm ?

I see it a lot in recent years. Although I saw something similar as far back as 2012 at Staunton and Ball's Sweeney Todd.

I certainly wouldn’t design a theatre that way today (as if I could design a theatre!), but the history and charm of the building outweigh the awkwardness of it for me. Especially the gorgeous auditorium itself.

The remaining ticket prices are EYE-WATERING, aren't they?
I'm gutted that I wasn't more forward thinking/understanding of dynamic prices and booked a 3rd or 4th trip.
They should have extended (had the theatre been available) - even if it was La Tucker doing another month.
Could they have an encore run next year somewhere?!

That was how it was done last night - doors closed and young Norma on stage for maybe five minutes before the show started. Audience quietened for the appearance of young Norma but over time chatting restarted before the lights dimmed further for the start of the show. As for my view of the show, I loved it. I have no particular investment in Sunset Boulevard but saw the Coliseum revival so was familiar with the story. I wouldn't like every musical to be staged like this or even every production of Sunset Boulevard to be staged like this but I thought it brought a breath of fresh air and was visually dramatic. So put me as another entry in the 'pro' category...

I suspect Nicole's availability plus the fact they had the next two shows booked in meant an extension wasn't possible. I doubt it would be able to return, there isn't any available theatres.

Early bird definitely caught the worm on this one! Those £20 dress circle seats marked down during previews are looking like the purchase of the year.

Does anyone know if there's a way to buy the Sunset Blvd. baseball cap online? I missed it when I went, but noticed it in the programme at the end. Don't think there's one on Theatre Shop?
