Why do they tell us we should get excited for a marketing release? lol. That ain’t a cast recording!! Don’t even get me started! Peak 2023. EVERYTHING has to be announced. Announcements of announcements of announcements. Assume Gen Z love this nonsense or they wouldn’t do it?! Amazed they don’t tease announcements of someone who works every second Wednesday in the box office going on sabbatical…..

Quite groundbreaking that this has 100 5 star reviews on here. And for anyone who fancies reading the thread from the beginning there was a lot of negativity towards the production. Just shows! Including mine! I was sceptical that there would be an appetite for it before knowing the star & director. Beyond happy to have been proven wrong.

I really wasn't sure but I'm soon to make my 3rd visit so the first to admit I was very wrong.

Surely the buzz behind the show and Nicole's performance is enough to get it started in NYC, and then I think they can probably rely on word of mouth and awards to carry it to profit. Not saying this spring is the best time because of the competition from very strong revivals (e.g. Merrily & Cabaret). But if I were an investor I'd take the bet on this production and Nicole. This is very special in my opinion, even more special than Eddie Redmayne in Cabaret lol. This production and Nicole are truly groundbreaking. If the production has plans to go to Broadway, ATG would be taking it, and there is no way they'll want anything to encroach on any possible award chances or hype for Cabaret. The expense involved with that, plus the potential for it being the long runner. No way this goes this spring.

Why do people think Sunset has the potential to be a long runner on Broadway? The original production wasn't, running just over 2 years and the 2017 revival was a limited run. My guess is that it'll be a limited run on Broadway as well.

The trailer came as a shock to me. From all the positivity about the show, I was expecting killer vocals. But those vowels are mangled at the end of the track in a very ugly way. It might make sense in context but it was really not what I expected

If I were making a bet, I'd predict that it will be next season on Broadway that this transfers. The producers are going to want to give it a chance for some awards, and this Tony Season is looking quite crowded with some heavy competition. Without announcing anything right away, seeing how things go with the Oliviers and if it gets some nominations/awards, that could start building buzz for a Spring 2025 opening and have it running in time for the Tony Awards (I'm thinking like the 2017 revival, Feb 2025, announce a limited run, extend it on the Broadway opening till the end of June)

Yeah, it does rather prove the point about Sondheim, Broadway and cast recordings!

Caught this again this week. I've kind of run out of superlatives! Audience much better than previous two trips. Was a captioned performance. No idea if that had anything to do with it, but anyway it was a great atmosphere.
The note Nicole holds in the middle of AIWNSG is now so long am amazed she has the breath to then finish off the song. Not a fan of the mid song cheering but it totally invites it so can see why it happens. Incredible stuff.
Whole show sounded ever so slightly slower - not sure if it was a different conductor to the usual MD.
It's so extraordinary, it almost reminds me of when Cats was unveiled in 1981 and it felt like a seismic shift in the way of doing things. (It's different of course as Cats ushered in 2 decades of mega musicals, whereas in all likelihood this will probably usher in, errrr, nothing. But I find it similarly awe inspiring).
As for the should it/shouldn't it continue in the UK debate upthread. I agree that it's so special you'd not wanna see it diluted so I'd reluctantly agree that it probably shouldn't be toured. But I totally think it could and should do another London run and that would not dampen it's legacy as a unique moment in time. Like how Follies did two runs at the National, Cats did two seasons at the Palladium, Company was one run but was 6 (ish?!) months I think. It definitely has the audience for a bit longer, and (at a purely selfish level) I am not done seeing it. But yeah, I definitely think we can have more (within reason) and it's legacy will remain iconic. They just need to be careful. Which I am sure they would be!
Anyway, sorry boring post, nothing I've not said before. I don't plan to see anything else before this finishes (other than the gay event of the millennium - Diana in concert). V much my thing of the moment!

Is the best way to get a cheap(er) ticket in a good place for this still to book direct on the day? Prices in advance are ££££.

Well it’s a great trailer but not sure it really adds anything we didn’t already know - guess they’ll just be using this to ensure full houses through to the end of the run. Lovely to hear a snippet of that wonderful orchestra though.
Interesting that they include some amazing review quotes but then the star ratings that flash up mostly look to be fours. Bit like CRH on Strictly saying something’s ‘ah-may-zing’ then only giving an 8 or 9!

I presume the trailer is aimed at people who haven't seen the musical so to them it will be new, plus gives people an idea about the new staging so that they won't be disappointed when they go and realise its not a traditional version of Sunset

This might have been discussed but is the orchestra heavily amplified in this production? I don’t think I’ve ever heard an orchestra so loud before - and I’ve seen large orchestras before in the context of musicals (18-25 pieces)

But the sound quality is so good it doesn't sound that way.

Whatever they’ve done, it sounds incredible! Still feel like it was one of the ‘best sounding’ shows I’ve ever seen. Almost up there with the Coliseum Sunset.

Even in a relatively simple show like A Christmas Carol at the Old Vic, the sound gets ramped right up for the "See Amidst The Winters Snow" section with a brass/organ backing track. I'd be keen to know with Sunset Boulevard whether the sound is achieved through clever processing and layers of instruments in the pit or whether some of what is achieved is pre-programmed/synthesised. I've seen some shows where there are one or two instruments and two keyboardists and it sounds like there are twenty people in the pit.

I'm not sure if a London return is likely, theatre wise there isn't anything available which could house it that offers both sufficient capacity and intimacy.

With the way they’ve faded them in and out, the fifth one is shaded so much I missed it entirely 🤦🏼♂️

All the star ratings shown are 5 stars. Thank you, you’re totally right! With the way they’ve faded them in and out, the fifth one is shaded so much I missed it entirely 🤦🏼♂️ I interpreted the shady fifth star as Jamie Lloyd cocking a snook at reviews/critics - a bit of a "we're so cool, we don't need to emphasise your five stars". It feels entirely in keeping with the style of the production.
