I think because Nicole cancelled Friday/Saturday lots of people would’ve moved their tickets around this week. TKTS is always good but you need to get them early in the day. Thank you! I had my eye on one for 90 earlier today but it’s gone will try another day then. There's some £87.50 ones available now in the stalls if you're quick

I also spoke to Maria Friedman. She was SO lovely. But full review of the show tomorrow. In short: GIVE THEM ALL THE AWARDS.

I think Sunset's biggest competition is Next to Normal..which I think has a stronger score.

The ATG ticket price drop/changes are great news for audience (and I am pleased to have picked up a great premium ticket at 50% off) but must be raising some alarm bells to the producers. No matter how bookings are now post covid you would not expect a. Limited run show being lauded as one of the best of the year and with a star name to be having not only on the day tickets available but also at big reductions. The seats freely on offer this late are the ones they would normally be selling at premium to the high value tourists market. Atg also seem to have held back a lot of seats , the whole m row of the dress circle suddenly went on offer on Tuesday for today - Thursday . Very mixed messages for the producers to review what future the show may have, if the high end tickets are not selling out in the limited london run would they on broadway which seems to need the premium market up to cover costs more than the west end.

What this tells me is that people in London don't want to spend £245 on a "premium" seat - the prices have jumped on all tickets over the last year or so. I think Broadway is a different beast which plays to a more affluent core audience.

I finally got to see this on Monday this week. I'm a long-time fan of Sunset, having seen the Adelphi and German productions multiple times, as well as the two subsequent UK tours.
It was with some trepidation that I booked this one, but am SO glad that I am. What a show! I was worried the lack of sets/lavish costumes/props etc. would diminish the impact, but if anything having the performers just 'raw' focused down on the actual performances and lyrics so much better.
I thought the sound was absolutely sublime. I was in the middle of J row in the dress circle, and as soon as the overture started I felt as though I was listening to a film soundtrack in surround sound - such a rich orchestral sound, and when the performers were singing every line was clear.
We had Rachel as Norma, and.... well... wow! I've seen her on stage before in both Wicked and Come From Away, but her version of Norma was simply breathtaking. With One Look was an absolute masterclass in how to deliver the song - by the end it genuinely felt as though the whole audience were holding their breath waiting for the final notes to hit. Her overall portrayal was faultless, and the final descent into madness worked really well.
Gregor Milne was on as Joe (his first show, apparently) and played the role superbly. His act two opening walk around the theatre was so well done - the little Easter eggs such as Max with a photo of Rachel in Defying Gravity on his mirror, and a cardboard cut-out of ALW at the bottom of the stairs brought some comedy to the number - how he sings and acts while doing all the walking around and down endless staircases I really don't know.
The show itself was so interesting to watch. I was worried that my impressions of previous versions would cloud my enjoyment, but if anything this production made me think "Gosh, that was cleverly done!". I've never liked the car chase scene - it's never felt as though a good solution has been thought up - but having Joe holding the steering wheel/camera while film-style credits rolled on the screen behind him felt like the perfect way to deflect from any 'looks a bit cheesy' thoughts. I loved 'Every Movie's a Circus' too, with the performers sitting in a row, standing up together, then sitting down leaving two people standing up to deliver their lines.
I did miss 'The Lady's Paying' and 'Eternal Youth' as they bring a bit of lightness to what's essentially a very dark show, but the comedy touches like Max with the party hats helped with that.
Strangely: the friend I saw the show with had never seen it before, and I thought they would find it easier to watch as they had nothing to compare it with, but they said in the interval that they'd been rather distracted by thinking "I wonder how they did that in previous versions". They're going back to see it again in December for a Nicole show, so it'll be interesting to hear their thoughts!
Would I see it again? Absolutely, 100%.

I wouldn’t pay £245 for any show. Even one I adore like this production.
Broadway is a different kettle of fish.

Broadway is only willing to pay crazy prices for the right show. They have so many flop shows because they are so reliant on premium pricing.
I'm not sure Nicole is a big enough name these days to get people to fork out 300 dollars or more. She isn't 'A list'. And those that know the show itself associate it with Glenn, and the classic interpretation.
It will be interesting to see how it does. But in an already stacked revival season it does seem a bit of a risk.

Surely the buzz behind the show and Nicole's performance is enough to get it started in NYC, and then I think they can probably rely on word of mouth and awards to carry it to profit. Not saying this spring is the best time because of the competition from very strong revivals (e.g. Merrily & Cabaret). But if I were an investor I'd take the bet on this production and Nicole. This is very special in my opinion, even more special than Eddie Redmayne in Cabaret lol. This production and Nicole are truly groundbreaking.

She may not be A List now, by I actually think her spending so much time in the UK over the last decade will make American audiences quite interested to see her if enough hype surrounds the transfer. To a lot of millennials she was pretty iconic growing up. I could see this doing really well for a limited run on Broadway once word of mouth spreads and celebs go and see it.

For musicals, I think the standards for writing and performing are much higher in NYC personally. Everything else the west end can be equally good at, and we seem to be quite creative in terms of direction of revivals. Of course this is just a generalisation, and the best of the west end will always be better than average Broadway. And the very very best of the west end can be just as good as the very best of Broadway too (example: this production and Nicole).

On another note, As Sunset has now re-entered my consciousness far more with reading about it every day I found myself watching on YouTube the "Sunset Blvd The Palace of Dreams" special that they did pre-Australian opening with Debra Byrne and a then very new-young Hugh Jackman. It was interesting to see and hear Trevor Nunn and Bob Appian talking about how they created and approached things and compare to what we hear and see with this new production. I've just watched this - thanks for mentioning it! A real fresh-faced Hugh Jackman there. So lovely to see that stunning set again. I love these behind-the-scenes build up to opening documentaries. It's a real shame they don't seem to bother anymore. I remember watching ones on Beauty and the Beast and Copacabana in London which were really fascinating.

Ahhh I don't think they'd be too worried re premium seats. It's sold so well overall - in fact I tried to get a last minute ticket a couple of times recently only to find it sold out. Much as I can't bear them, ATG are very good with price adjusting to get the maximum return they can. And most price changes have been up. So what was the majority of stalls/circle seats price point of £89 ish has gone up for most of the rest of the run to £125 off peak and £145 peak. Their takings have way exceeded what they would have made had everything sold at it's initial price when tickets went on sale (over the course of the run). The premium seats are a punt for them. No "regular" theatre goer would go near them. But they'll always like to have a few on sale as there are some bonkers very rich people or businesses or tourists that might buy them in advance/nearer the time. And if they don't they come down on the day as better to get something for them. But it's really a small amount of nice to have extra revenue and not a big part of the overall business model. Or a big proportion of income as there's so few at the £250 odd mark. Broadway on the other hand I have minimal understanding of the whole "let's sell 2/3 of the stalls for 400 dollars" thing. It's totally baffling to me. No idea if it's pure greed or if they have to do that there to make a profit. I'd say again, run it a bit longer here first. It's SO much safer, and the demand is there. Pure guess but with Nicole surely this could have another 6-8 months.

Oh my goodness, I am the opposite. Every show I have followed to Broadway has been totally ruined in my opinion. I will never waste money going there again. Ive been disappointed too many times. Unfortunately this has been my experience as well and I have given it up. I’ve also had similar experiences. What hurts me the most about the insane prices is it doesn’t even guarantee you comfort/view. You’re just as likely to be unbelievably cramped with shocking sight lines, poor rakes and seats not even offset. Add in all the queuing, FOH shouting at you and the chaos of the loos and it’s the most non relaxing experience!
