Anyone know when Press night is? Looks like it's June 30th, it's sold out with only one performance on the Sunday compared to the usual two. |

They must be very ‘small’ mentally to gain satisfaction from leaving a comment-less sweeping generalisation. By all means leave a detailed diatribe containing your reasoned thoughts on the new production, or y’know, leave an anonymous hit & run needle-d!ck style one star review…what a choice! 😜 Agreed. Well, this show was fantastic. I think it's possible that it might be a different experience where you sit but aside from a couple of mic cues it was faultless. There's so much happening and, yes, the races are slower and the track circuit is shorter but it doesn't matter. Compared to the original, having a child onstage playing Control is a brilliant decision and really helps stitch the story together. I think hindsight is a great thing but if people watched this new show and the old Apollo Victoria version, they'd appreciate how much progress has been made on all fronts. It has been modernised and the updates feel comfortable and relevant rather than tokenistic. 5 stars from me - I felt that pang of parental joy one feels watching something with lots of nostalgia, and knowing your children are experiencing a new version of what you experienced in the 1990s. I grinned throughout and this production made us all feel so happy. Job done.

Hoping for the same family glow in a few weeks. We’re taking our 3 , and despite them being at various points of their twenties, all had some sort of relationship with Starlight that they’ll finally get to make good on.

I can’t stop thinking about the show… it’s impossible for me to be objective at all as it was the first ever show I saw when I was 12 in London and is the reason I fell in love with musical theatre. I vividly remember watching a workshop about the bridge and they pumped out phantom music while showing us how it all worked. Then seeing the show and my tiny little mind was blown and in love forever. This would’ve been 1995 I think. So seeing this last night had so much sentiment attached to it and I can’t not love it. My friend knew nothing about the show though… and he also loved it and loved the child’s imagination and dreams elements of the show, themes of wanting to be loved and lacking confidence.
I don’t need to compare it to the original because I have that beautiful memory, and anything else just evokes that again for me. But that bridge… wowzers.

It was a school trip including that workshop and then the show. But if there is a video somewhere too I wanna see!  |

The show without the spectacle is proper 80s dross. I gave it 4 stars for last night.

I've watched a few of the curtain call vids on YouTube and it looks to me as if the cast are not wearing as much make up as they used to. I remember the very heavy make up and it making them look more like characters than actors in costumes? The whole thing looks more "friendly/smiley/kiddie" than I remember it being. More colourful too.

P.S. I think somebody mentioned high fives previously - plenty around today on the whole circuit and even up and down the side ramps leading to the raised section. Joyous silliness.

I remember the very heavy make up and it making them look more like characters than actors in costumes? The whole thing looks more "friendly/smiley/kiddie" than I remember it being. More colourful too. Lots of makeup used and they look very cartoon-like with what looks like plastic/latex head pieces for some. The costumes were fab - totally OTT and exactly what I'd hoped for. |

I was in a platform seat, last night.
edit: just looked and I wasn’t in a platform seat, but trackside seat that cost me £29.50, cannot see any tickets near that price available now.

Have your opinion but this doesn't look like a 1 star show to me. People need to move on. I mean, it doesn't look great though. Not in that clip anyway. It's never been a strong show, it's always been about the spectacle, excitement and the 'event'. If that's all gone and stripped back, then the show is more exposed so of course people will comment on passed productions. I got some excellent video footage today of the extended bows that might convince you. This show has spectacle and excitement by the bucket load. |

Could I ask, what is the sound design like? Obviously they've thrown technology at it. Always found the sound at the Troubadour for Newsies pretty abysmal as it was never built as a theatrical space.
Have they fixed that and can you hear everything clearly?
