It does seem a lot slower (although I have only seen the Megamix clip), but I noticed the same when I saw it in Bochum last year, when compared to the original in London. I think you just can't expect it to be as fast as it was, not with H&S the way it is now (and tbf, rightly so, given the amount of accidents that happened in the show over the years).

I saw it Years ago and there is probably only one song I remember as it doesn't really have any hits as such. Is Only he still in it or did that disappear years ago? Starlight rarely appears on any compilation albums . Am looking forward to seeing it in July though.

A relatively straightforward way of depicting speed might be the incredible screen / projections. When they’re up at the top they could have some great fast paced imagery and skate on the spot before then rolling down for slower parts. Even just for a few moments. I do think that’s the only thing for me that could do with a boost. I can’t stop humming I Do!

It can’t speed up that much though surely? The whole thing will have been blocked based on the speed that the skaters are required to go at. If they speed up they’re going to be in their next position too early. Our old friend the “Elf” is probably dictating too, not to mention insurance clauses. Anyone being what might be considered reckless and injuring themselves is going to be a problem on the claim. Things have changed in forty years. I read something quickly in the programme about them having trackers or something so the lights follow them wherever they are. I might’ve misunderstood, can anyone confirm? Yes, the lights and sound track each performer so that automated lights can follow particular people at particular times and the soundscape reflects where performers are at any given time. This was utilised particularly well in Cinderella where the sound and light followed performers during the ballroom sequence on the revolve. Another good example of how spots follow actors is in Guys and Dolls where if you are on Gallery 2 you can see the lights tracking individuals very closely. I haven't seen Starlight yet (seeing it in five hours) but agree that the blocking will align with video, sound and light cues. I wouldn't be surprised if they speed it up as the cast find their feet.

Knew wouldn’t be fast due to the space plus health and safety but I really did think there would be wow moments via video/projection creating the illusion of speed!

Yeah I Do is a brilliant song. I know his son wrote it officially but sounds SO classic ALW I do wonder if he helped. If not, his son needs to start writing musicals :-)

I wonder if they got rid of the different nationality trains so as not to appear to conform to cultural stereotypes, but I actually liked that element. I also think, if you are a tourist watching and you see the Italian train or the Japanese train it means you probably support that character and find that fun?!

With the score, Is "Only He" back in with this version?

With the score, Is "Only He" back in with this version? No, that disappeared in the late 80’s I think. They briefly used a version of Only You in the UK tour, but replaced it with I Do

Or they might want to avoid international hot waters. In Bochum the Russian train keeps the flag tightly wrapped around the pole now so as not to fly the Russian flag in the theatre. But yea, I kinda enjoyed the "stereotypes", I mean, it was a) done with a wink and b) it did capture typical gestures and such and wasn't a silly caricature.

I always took the "stereotypes" to sort of be what a child sees the world as, sort of like It's a Small World at Disneyland or something, and they weren't really meant to offend. But I'm really not surprised they'd just scrap them all to be safe, especially if this is the newest flagship English production people are coming to see. There's still a lot of international trouble around the "rising sun" symbol which is still part of the costume of the Japanese train in the German production.
I also suppose they'd want to avoid any kind of tabloid backlash, backlash around the current UK political situation/international relations situation or whatever. I don't know. It seems cut for safety.

Whilst most would take it in an unoffended spirit I just don’t think you’re 100% safe in 2024 with French trains “mais oui-ing” smoking Gitanes and Italian ones “Mamma Mia-ing” and going on about pizza.

Indeed. The generation prone to getting the fabled ick (who producers think help shift tickets with their hunfluencing) would have a field day!

Tbf I do understand it. The Russian train is still in the German production, and doesn't fly a flag in the megamix anymore for obvious reasons. I guess it's just safer to change them completely.

Just landed back in Spain after a fleeting visit for last night. I really like the new show.
Can we talk about the inflatables, please?

They must be very ‘small’ mentally to gain satisfaction from leaving a comment-less sweeping generalisation. By all means leave a detailed diatribe containing your reasoned thoughts on the new production, or y’know, leave an anonymous hit & run needle-d!ck style one star review…what a choice! 😜

fascinated by the six 1-star reviews on the poll... is there anonymous review-bombing now on TB? Not me but there are certainly times where I get home from a show, read or catchup on a thread and put my vote in that evening. It can take me a few days to pull together more thoughts that I might want to post up and indeed sometimes it might be so well covered in the thread that it isn't worth a more detailed post. So I think votes without comments are just fine.

Saw this on YouTube - the “Megamix” at the end Have your opinion but this doesn't look like a 1 star show to me. People need to move on. I mean, it doesn't look great though. Not in that clip anyway. It's never been a strong show, it's always been about the spectacle, excitement and the 'event'. If that's all gone and stripped back, then the show is more exposed so of course people will comment on passed productions.

Half way on Sunday evening. This show is immense. Fantastic. Sensory overload. I saw the original and this is every bit as good. It's a Starlight Express for 2024. Sound is brilliant, light incredible, singing is great and energy is high. I'm sat in raised trackside seats and you feel really immersed in the show. Superb so far.

I must’ve had the worst seat, because the sound was so weak haha. New thought: I appreciated the changing of potentially offensive lyrics.
