To be fair, the original poster was making a 'this would look good in there' post - they didn't have any intel

Well it's the perfect venue and could work really well. A lot of people have been saying recently that it would be great venue if the show came back, so fingers crossed this will happen. It's just that bl**dy trek to Wembley. Try doing it from Manc! 🤨

But is it happening in Wembley or is it just happening?
With Phantom closed and Bad Cinderella bombing on Broadway, ALW surely has time to dedicate himself to Starlight Express for a few months now.

Not just him on his iPhone 5 trying to find Arlene's number. 🤣

Or maybe he would just like time to grieve his son Ouch with the ‘moral superiority’ burn! You realise that ALW has a production company who will be doing things for him? Not just him on his iPhone 5 trying to find Arlene's number. 🤣 Not being superior at all, just factual. The man's just lost his son and to say he now had loads of time on his hands seems a bit cold. He sounded and looked still in shock and a bit frail at phantoms closing. And yeah he has a production company, but he still needs to be on board for consultation. Especially as we all know how super involved he likes to be. He seems to have washed his hands wlof cinderella, phantom now closed. He may semi or fully retire.

ALW has no intention of slowing down. He’s been in NYC for goodness sake promoting phantom closing.
This revival is happening. Happy to see anyone not believing it proven wrong very soon!

I’m more interested in the ‘how’? The scale etc. I’d love to be proven wrong, and see actual money invested in a major sit down of this, but I have NO desire to see either of the previous tour presentations brought back.

Me too - I'd love to see a version with actual live racing rather than 3D screens. What also concerns me is that every version of this show seems to be meddled with more, in terms of orchestration and characters being added and removed! Personally I think every attempt to modernise the score seems more out of touch, and they should just really ramp up the original versions and lean into the 80s retro charm.

I'd kill to see the original version with "Belle the Sleeping Car" and either the ultimate power ballad "Only He" for Pearl or at least the glorious original version of "Only You". The German version now has a British engine called Brexit, who quits before he even enters the race. I don't think we'll see him in a new British version though I think transforming the Troubadour would be much easier than sticking it into an old theatre, because the Troubadour is basically a big empty box that can be rearranged without any worry about it being a listed building. Even if the walkways on which the Newsies are presently running the audience are a bit rickety, surely those could be reconstructed in a new more stable fashion for rollerskating.

Starlight Express must be the most meddled musical in history. I do wonder why they keep tinkering with it?

Starlight Express must be the most meddled musical in history. I do wonder why they keep tinkering with it? One of the big problems would be that there is absolutely no way the original version would be acceptable in todays climate. Frankly, it’s surprising that some of those lyrics got passed in the 80s. The engines being male and the lead carriage roles being female would also be problematic. As one of my friends said upon hearing the cast recording, it gives a whole new meaning to pulling a carriage! A big scale revival would be fantastic; I haven’t kept up with all the revisions over the years but changes would need to be made for it to be acceptable today. I suspect that a lot of the revisions made have this in mind.

Safer to keep it as a museum piece and raise a discussion, than turning it into a ‘tripping over itself mess of ‘right on’. They are people acting; ‘pretending to be trains’. As long as the bad behaviour is ‘punished’ and made a point of, it is definitely preferable to a ghastly mess.

I can agree with that, and personally would prefer not to have too many revisions, more like a few tweaks here and there, But I can’t see it happening, especially as ALW seems particularly sensitive to criticism. Whatever happens, this version if / when it happens will be touted by RUG as definitive and the best ever, and if it proves to be entertaining I shall most definitely be booking.

I’m not exactly sure why people still come for Mr. B. He knows from which he speaks.
I’d love to see a revival of Starline express weather at this venue or another. It’s been running in Bochum for so long that it’s obvious that there’s still interest in it. In that version, they made big papa, big mama, and then not sure if she’s still in it but reva rice, who played Pearl was playing that role.

Funnily enough when i was watching Newsies a few months ago in its immersive setting i thought - wow the Bochum production of Starlight would work wonderfully in that Wembley Troubador space.
I've seen 8 versions of Starlight since the 90's. The best one was Bochum 2000. It was a happy mix of the old original show (Caboose, Engine of Love, Only He, Only You, Poppa and no Belle). I had goosebumps throughout the show. Once they begin to really mess with it, it sadly lost its spark.
Yes the original show has issues of misogyny and toxic male social issues, even the sub textual frowning upon sexuality (Electa) - but it WORKED. The same way Grease, Miss Siagon and Les Mis work in their current setting.
I flew over to Germany to see then BRAND new re workshoped 35th anniversary woke production and though I liked the female engine addition and Poppa's sex change - i didn't get one goosebump. The version 7.3 had removed all the magic and the new songs (I got You), costumes, removal of Ashley and Buffy horrendous creative decisions
I hope if they bring it back ALW and others decide on the correct version! Knowing the mess of Cinderella i doubt it!

I don't think we'll see him in a new British version though In the older ones the British train was delayed due to staffing issues wasn't it? (Could be worse — TransPennine told me that my last train "was cancelled due to short-notice timetable alterations". Ah, so my train is cancelled because it was cancelled. Helpful.)

Haha, I wish they had the guts to include Brexit "The Train To Nowhere" (I think that's correct from the German translation) in a new UK production. Control announcing just before Race 2 in Bochum "The British Train Brexit HAS BEEN SCRAPPED! Place for late entry, place for late entry...." is always a good moment.

When I saw it in Bochum last month the announcement was “Brexit the British train has run itself off the rails” which was hilarious
