Wonder ... do you think any of the NEWSIES cast will be auditioning for this? They certainly proved they were all awesome dancers ... could they translate that into skating? :-) It wouldn't surprise me if we don't see some of them or maybe one or two from Crazy For You. |

My anticipation and excitement is increasing as to when we'll get the cast announcement for this. Apparently it is now fully cast so we merely await the official announcement (or indeed in 2024, leaks thereof).
The 2024/5 Bochum cast was unveiled today. The new guys have already started skate school (for a 29th May opening night) so London can't be far behind :-)

He is already signed up for Kiss Me Kate. Jordan Luke Gage as Rusty? (would he want to do it though?) Big fan of Jordan's and I think he'd be perfect as Rusty - cracking voice (really well suited to the Starlight score) and appropriate youthful naive charm. My hunch, given what we know so far, is that is casting will be more leftfield than your classic West End romantic male lead however.... |

My hunch, given what we know so far, is that is casting will be more leftfield than your classic West End romantic male lead however.... The more I hear about them reinventing it and going left field in the casting, the more nervous I feel. A lot of people have booked this expecting to see the show they remember fondly from the 80’s and 90’s. I just hope they don’t alienate their audience too much. Don’t get me wrong, I’m very excited to see it staged fully again, and it can’t be worse than the tours they did (can it?), but I really want them to get it right. |

get it right =/= doing the same as they did before.
sometimes the best casting/ production is the thing you didn't realise works well. musicals can only continue to attract both existing and new audiences is by applying a healthy dose of reinvention. otherwise you're just microwaving old ready meals.

I've yet to see any 'reinvention' that I preferred to the thing it tried to reinvent. Occasionally it's just as good, but often it ends up being change for change's sake. I absolutely cannot forgive the 'Momma' thing, for example, no matter who plays the role.
I'll probably see this, because we haven't had Starlight in the UK in any form for a long time, but I really just want the show I remember, or close to it.

Given all the changes that have happened to the show since the 'original' and I probably don't even know about half of them, I am going in expecting very little of the old show to remain.
As much as I would love to see the show I originally fell in love with, that's long gone and I'm resigned to seeing a new version of Starlight.
I'm guessing this will be based on the current Bochum version?

Yea, but Bochum keeps being updated as well, most recently for the 30th anniversary following the TOP workshops, which is an update that hasn't been properly staged in the UK so far. So this is still an update for the UK, but it could also be an update of this update...
Considering the amount of times this show has been fiddled with, I don't think it's wrong to wonder what exactly will arrive at Wembley. An "update of an update" might also mean that they have realized how shockingly misguided some updates were and have reversed them, such as the godawful new version of the overture or the supposedly feminist but ultimately regressive and sexist change from Poppa to Momma.
