It was recorded a few weeks back. That's interesting, was a cast recording on the cards from the start or did it only just become apparent? I had the impression they'd recorded some of the tracked band parts even before the run. That said, there are the performer's instagrams of them in a studio, so. A matter of dropping in to do the vocals?

A matter of dropping in to do the vocals? I am completely guessing...... but I think it might be a live OLC. And Jaydon just went into the studio to do vocals for a single/bonus version of Hydrogen. The Other Songs have just done Sunset Live and, thanks in part to Cameron's team's dedication to them, the know how for decent live recordings in British MT has come on a lot last 15 years. I honestly have no idea though and this is a total guess. I'd prefer studio, but I think we'd have seen more studio leaks on social media. (On an aside the sped up version of the title song has been used for nearly all the ads before during and after the launch - despite not featuring anywhere in the show. I'd love this to be a bonus track. Ditto the 80's/90's dance versions of There's Me, Right Place Right Time and Next Time You Fall In Love they play on loop FOH at The Troubadour. Though assume I can put these things firmly on the list of niche fan stuff only, that definitely won't be happening!)

Not live I don't think, fairly sure they went into a studio.

Doesn't look set up for instruments in the video so likely what I thought where they popped in to drop the vocals on the backing tracks. Much easier I bet with the cast size and their schedules!

Went again last night! Random thoughts in no particular order.
- It's incredibly tight now and is definitely the best version of itself it's ever been
- everyone extremely confident on skates now; I thought they were fine at the start to be honest, but they are now a lot freer and do a lot more ad-libs on wheels and it's actually quite noticeable. Being less careful and deliberate with the skating and choreo gives the illusion that the whole thing is free-er and dare I say it slightly faster.
- all the leads remain incredibly strong but I think Jade (Momma) and Kayna (Pearl) have progressed the most. Jade is now acting Momma so well and completely embodies her. Full of expression and character. I think Kayna has probably just grown in confidence and is every part the leading lady (I think in the early weeks Jeevan took to Rusty so effortlessly that she suffered ever so slightly by comparison but they are a perfect double act now)
- the male controls are much easier to hear and understand what they are saying than the female controls. They are all sensational and I wouldn't criticise kiddie actors but in a show that otherwise has perfect sound, surely the sound dept can do something about hearing what the female controls are saying
- the races I think are confusing for people who don't know the show. Don't think it helps that there is so much going on on stage when the couples are announced at the start of each race, or that the engine and coach/truck do not come on stage together
- ALW was in. I see him so many times at shows (I think he was at more Cinderella performances I went to than not) but I've honestly never seen him look so happy. He usually has this intense and vaguely concerned expression when watching his own shows but he was grinning like a kid. Glad he was enjoying it lol. (Funny that he still wants to go now it's locked and up and running - he certainly takes interest in his shows; well he does in this one now lol - I didn't see him much at the AV back in the day)
- the charm and the heart bursts out of the stage. I miss the original and this will never be "my" version of the show. It's lost a lot of the grit, edge, huge 1980's industrial aesthetic and other worldliness that I loved. But for that sacrifice it does have a lot of heart and I think you feel a bigger connection between actor and audience. There was always a degree of separation (for me) anyway with the original versions.
- I've always felt in Bochum you couldn't reinstate Girl's Rolling Stock as it's whole feel just no longer fits with the aesthetic and mood of the post 30th version. Sadly. London is so much brighter and "friendlier" for want of a better word and I think it could slot back in very nicely after UNCOUPLED. And it would give Tassita and Belle more to do. It's such a great song and only 2.5 minutes. I wish they'd do it (they definitely won't)
- Audience remains approx 95% British. Clearly we are still on the crest of the wave of the UK nostalgia visits. I wonder if and how they will sell it to tourists when the time comes.
Anyway there we are. I still mourn it's minimal resemblance to the original but I really do enjoy this version more every time I go. And it's still easily the best thing on in London for me. Well, maybe joint with Les Mis!

That's interesting as I found both girls I've seen as control absolutely perfect to understand, and the one boy I saw was really difficult.

I don't understand/know 99% of their musical references lol - this is the cruel generation gap I guess. Pretty cool that the guy who had the 1993 version of Starlight dedicated to him is now releasing an album of it! (Not sure if Billy ever had a version of Starlight dedicated to him though lol). Looks like I was wrong on the above btw - lots more studio pics emerged so deffo not Live!

Just had an horrendous thought: I hope Sydnie Christmas’s single comes nowhere near this album, apart from as a bonus track.

… apart from as a bonus track. Which can be forgotten about before it gets played. It is atrocious. No doubt it’ll be a turfed out for a Christmas single or **shudder** John Lewis Christmas Advert

I didn’t know that single existed. Now I do, so thanks for that 🫤
I think she’s got a good voice, but tries way too hard to sound unique. Something a bit Pam Doove (from the League of Gentlemen) about her at times.

I agree that she seems to be putting on a pained sound (which is common nowadays) maybe to sound like emotion or something. She must be a good singer to have played all those roles in Bochum.

Was anyone there Saturday matinee? The cast board said that Charles Butcher was on as Green Arrow, but I really thought the actor looked (and sounded like) Gary Sheridan (who is also one of the most talented skaters in the show). But maybe I’m confused with the wigs and make up.
To further complicate matters, West End Understudies is claiming Gary made his Green Arrow debut on Sunday.
I did sit in the final ticket area I’ve not tried before, Trackside 2, and the view was great and I picked up on some things I’ve missed before. The show started late and the sound was not good though, and it was almost like a whole track was missing. They had a male conductor (previously there have been two women sharing the role), but he wouldn’t have been mixing the sound. There were some occasions when members of the cast started singing early, stopped, then started again, which makes me think their audio was off too. There were also microphones turned on late. Very unusual, as I’ve always been impressed with how good the sound is compared to Newsies, especially with the unusual seating arrangements.
Still lots of excellent skating and visuals and a fun show. And this is still selling exceptionally well to the audience who remembers this from its previous incarnations. And I’m impressed how the cast duck down on the ramps when you’re filming the stage (at the end). I really must make time to edit and share my clips.

What is the space and legroom situation with seats at Starlight if you’re mid row? (asking for a chunky friend 😐)
ETA By space I mean is it cramped?

Not really, they’re more like cinema seats with a cup holder etc.

Do the seats differ depending where you’re sitting? When I went to Newsies I was in a normal seat, but for Starlight the last row of the first class carriages were high stools.
