So, has The Mousetrap been closed for sufficient time that the official film version can be made? I read an interesting article about this which I can't find offhand, my apologies. The film rights owners the Woolf family did try and get a movie off the ground a few years back, but it was obvious the estate (her grandson if I recall correctly) would contest and they were slapped with an immediate cease and desist, leaving it dead in the water. In the article I read (wish I could find it!) it does explain that being closed due to Covid wouldn't pass legal muster for the agreement of "six months closure before the movie can be made" to stand up. There is, however, a fairly faithful Russian movie adaptation from 1990 called Мышеловка, which is quite odd, completely unsanctioned and to my knowledge hasn't been translated to English. |

Back in a theatre last night for the first time this year!
I have only seen The Mousetrap once before, on tour. It didn't really grab me then. I enjoyed this version more, but I expect a lot of that is due to just being in a theatre (my first time ever in St Martin's, which is a small but traditional looking theatre in every sense).
It was only the second performance of the new Cast A, including Danny Mac during his limited engagement. The cast did a great job (a couple of minor line issues I noticed in the second act, but that's understandable). This will never be the best play in the world, but it was performed with energy and enthusiasm.
It's almost all performed with social distancing, but that may well have always been the case. I can't remember.
Highlights to me were Cassidy Janson and Alexander Wolfe. I did like Danny Mac too as always, but the part he plays is more limiting.
The main change I'd make would be the Covid-19 awareness in the building. I was surprised not to have my temperature checked. There was hand sanitiser available, but putting on hand sanitiser at the time when the ushers are keen to scan your mobile phone is difficult.
The seats are spaced out in the building. I was in the Stalls against a wall, which missed the edge of the stage, but a nice place to sit and the sound projection was excellent. There were quite a few seats unsold or unoccupied which should have been available, despite the House Full sign, so I presume some people took advantage of the last minute cancellation option. The usual annoyance of a family arriving loudly about 10 minutes in, sat very close to me, the daughter complaining about the ice cream flavours, the son rushing out (with a loud chair bang) to check his mobile phone during Act 2. Only one mobile went off that I heard (someone else).
Back to Covid-19. I know it's hard for the ushers, but they do need to enforce the mask rules. There must have been people on every row I could see either not wearing a mask, or with this down below their chin (or nose).
Final thoughts. Go see this. It's so rare to see a fresh cast in the Mousetrap and I'm sure the theatre is much more pleasant without being overrun by tourists. I'm sure Cast B will be excellent too, although it's not really a play I could see twice is close succession.

Hi, I saw the first performance and it was my first time of seeing. We booked especially to see Cassidy Janson and Danny Mac as we are MT fans. We loved the show and it seemed faultless. I didn’t know the ending and didn’t see it coming ha! It was a bonus to see Susan Pentalogon and Derek Griffith but the whole cast were superb.

Who even goes to watch this (normally) anyway except for American tourists? It is also very popular with UK tourists visiting London, and I suppose they'd say with some justification "Who ever goes to watch 14 minute plays by Caryl Churchill ?". I don't think one outranks the other in terms of theatrical entertainment. |

Other non-American tourists, who have always said "some day when nothing else is on, I'll go and see The Mousetrap". As I did one day after years of thinking that (same with The Woman in Black). One of the most memorable, weirdest afternoons in the theatre, with a few tourists and a few very elderly British people in a nearly empty house. Still paid full price for my ticket in the back of the Stalls (God forbid we do any discounts  ) |

The filling in my theatrical sandwich (on reflection a three-show day might have been a tad ambitious given my relative lack of recent activity - absolutely knackered today!)... it was a lot of fun but ultimately not as satisfying as either Flight or Cruise. Which is about what I expected. Thanks and respect to FOH staff at all three venues for their friendly welcome and light-touch in applying the usual safety procedures.

FINALLY saw this after a million years last week. A rite of passage for every UK citizen Very good. Mum enjoyed it, being a murder mystery aficionado, but despite that, she didn't catch the killer! I did to my utter shock.
(Well, kinda. I made a comment about {Spoiler - click to view}
not fully trusting the detective/copper as he all the hallmarks of the killer, coat/hat/scarf etc.)
Glad to see this was open too (the lady behind the ticket desk wanted this to be the last one standing, lol) so me and the fam grabbed ourselves the front row day seats for 19 bob each. (We got to the venue mid afternoon and there was plenty availability, but then this was a mid week show.)
An absolute steal. I have never dabbled in day seats, and after that night I am never underestimating them again.

Finally saw this today (my dad had always said he wanted to see it but unfortunately passed away in 2020 without seeing it) I was a bit late to join the party to say the least, it said it was performance 28501 in the programme.
I can’t say I was really impressed, it was ok rather than anything great but I had to keep reminding myself just how old it is and how many things have been influenced by it: for starters the Italian who keeps saying ‘I know nothing!’ must surely have been an influence on Allo Allo and I don’t know if Christopher Wren is supposed to be a tribute to Charles Hawtrey?
I have a feeling I may have read online somewhere back in the mists of time who the culprit is/was but I correctly guessed who it was by the interval. I had no idea who any of the cast are but they acquitted themselves well, I doubt I’d go and see it again unless there was some major name recasting but I’m glad I saw it.

Went to see this last night. Similarly to the above poster, my grandma had wanted to see it as she was a big Agatha Christie fan but passed away in 2020, so thought I would see it in her memory.
I was quite pleased that I guessed who it was but heard a lot of gasps from the audience when it was revealed. The cast were good, especially Christopher Wren, and there were lots of amusing moments. Not my usual cup of tea but enjoyable nonetheless and I can see how it's stood the test of time.

I saw this today mainly just to cross it off the list given what an institution it is. I only paid £5 thanks to some London Theatre Week discounts and a Seatplan voucher! Probably wouldn’t have wanted to pay much more than that if I’m honest! It’s very clearly of its time and it showed - but then again I guess that’s part of the appeal! Glad that I can say I’ve seen it now. 😊

25th of November would have been the day to finally go, anita. Problem is, either the cast is having the night off, or tickets aren't available to 'normal' people like you or me. I'm going to try and get along myself at some point next year, so at least I can say I went during the 70th anniversary. |
