Am quietly amused at the thought of all those people who refused to see The Unfriend because of Frances Barber having to put their money where their mouth is and fork out to see this!

Hope it’s been trimmed from the 2hr stint when it was tried out in Edinburgh a few years back.
Very stuffy and uncomfortable lecture room led to a lot of sleeping audience members.
Got the makings of something good though, I’d expect.

Refusing to contribute to the pockets of a bigot doesn't mean someone has to "put their money where their mouth is" by seeing everything a trans or enby artist does. You can support trans and enby people while thinking one of their shows, or songs, or books might not be very good. So, your "quiet amusement" actually says more about you than somebody who has no problem calling Eddie she/her or Suzy but doesn't want to see her one-person Great Expectations. Not wanting to see it doesn't make them a hypocrite. Your comment though... Well, I'll leave it there. |

Wherever did I suggest that I would have a problem with acknowledging Eddie/Suzy's new name or pronouns? I've re-read every word I wrote and I can't see it mentioned... And how am I hypocrite exactly? I'm not going to see Suzy give us a flash of her Herbert Pocket and I haven't been to see the TERF-tastic Unfriend. I'm also very flattered that having been a member of this forum since last July, you've held back on commenting on anything or creating a thread until you read my comment. It's almost as if you were just sat there waiting for somebody that needed putting right to make yourself known. I'm assuming there are plenty of other online forums which have felt the full force of one of your self-righteous sermons and I think some will be happy to welcome you with open arms. Maybe less so by any women who are often shouted down and called a 'bigot' because they've expressed any gender critical opinions. Thankfully, I'm not one of them, so I don't need to worry but there will be women on this forum who do feel like they can't say anything even though they do feel a deep unease on the situation, sometimes based on personal trauma. So I'm glad that you've made your point that they would not be welcome to do so, despite the fact that they are regular contributors on all things theatre-related here. |

Here again, you tell on yourself by carrying on about how women feel in this conversation. Plenty of cis women are tired of the dog whistles and bigotry against trans people. Your first post was enough - this only said more. I’m not making a self-righteous sermon. I’m just sick of close-minded people blasting out their hateful views. Thank God for the ignore feature. Saw this on Sunday 25th on a £25 ticket from TodayTix.
The story is told from Pip’s perspective and Eddie plays all the characters, envisioning each one with a mannerism and different voice.
There were moments of poignancy, moments of hilarity, mostly in the moment when Eddie slipped into stand-up mode with an observation on what was happening within the story, and moments where I really felt it dragged in the exposition of the Dickens tome.
Standing outside for a breather in the interval, I was fascinated to see approximately 20 people leave and not come back in. In my opinion, they missed the stronger half when all the strands of the story were falling into place.
Glad I saw it, there is no doubt Eddie can tell a story, but there were just a few too many moments it fell flat. Worth a watch though on a cheap ticket if you get a chance in the next week.
