My non theatre friends won't have heard of any of them and I love that! It will be a clean production of the show and I can't wait to get some Sparkle and Shine back in my life!

There's an amateur production in Sheffield this week. Although the shops are full of trees and baubles, and Christmas adverts may be on TV, it still feels a little early.

Returning to the Birmingham REP this year as their main Christmas show for 7 weeks from 17 November So, 944 days after I booked to see this show that I love so much (having seen it in London in 2017 and 2018 and on tour in 2019 I finally made it back. And it confirmed my suspicions, this show does not need star casting. It really doesn’t. I didn’t miss them one bit. The cast of returnees and new faces were awesome. I was worried about seeing a new Mr Poppy but Ben Lancaster was fabulous in the part. The real stars are the kids of course. Matilda as ‘star’ was noticeably smaller than the rest of the kids and the cuteness this caused was really played on. It is great that this show had so many kids, 2 whole classes full, and doesn’t cheat by having the same kids playing Oakmoor and St Bernadettes. I’m back for the matinee on Saturday (I’ve travelled far so getting my money’s worth! And can’t wait.
