We have just watched all 4 and really don't get the negative critic reaction to it It does dwell on Diana. But she was central to the family at that period. I didn't see a drop off in script quality. The production values are as high as ever. Yes we have seen this with The Queen. But there was enough new material to justify revisiting it. My thoughts also |

I’m a huge fan of the series and The Crown is a good successor to the void that Downton Abbey left when it ended in 2015. Although The Crown’s final two seasons have declined in quality (season 5 was boring…when on earth was John Major a sort of a marriage therapist? And season 6 is a bit better now that the Diana saga was already done). The Queen’s death (and Prince Philip’s death a year earlier), and the Megxit backlash really affected the show’s perception. It doesn’t help that Peter Morgan’s The Queen remains a superior work, people can’t help but compare Imelda’s funeral speech to that of Helen Mirren’s and the late QEII.
I miss the political zest the previous 4 seasons had. Season 5 could have made parallels of the Tory infighting over Europe (the precursor to Brexit) and the Charles-Diana divorce. I expect more with season 6 part 2 with the Tony Blair saga, knowing this was one of Peter Morgan’s career-defining works (The Blair Trilogy). Please don’t waste Bertie Carvel’s talents!
I have a good number of protestations about the show’s plotlines but I always adore the cast, and many of them have go on to have bigger careers - the likes of Claire Foy, Vanessa Kirby, Josh O’Connor, Emma Corrin, Olivia Colman, Elizabeth Debicki, etc. Also, many of the cast have done more work on stage and do more screen work as well - Alex Jennings, Imelda Staunton, Ben Daniels, Lesley Manville, Victoria Hamilton, Jared Harris, Matt Smith, Tobias Menzies, Dominic West, Erin Doherty, Jonny Lee Miller, etc.

In fairness there are a lot of reports that John Major was some sort of mediator during the divorce time, and there must be reasons why he was appointed as special guardian to William and Harry.
I also actually preferred Imelda to Helen Mirran as The Queen.
