Just finished listening to this very interesting interview with Joanna Riding. I’d been browsing a while for a more in-depth interview and this seems to really encapsulate Jo best - discussions around Carousel, A Little Night Music and My Fair Lady. I wish I could go to Buxton but the dates are so awkward and with possible train strikes, will most likely have to give this a miss sadly.

Why did he keep saying Madame Rose? MAMA ROSE!!! I believe she does bill herself as Madame Rose while selling some her "acts" like "Madame Rose's Toreadorables" for example.

She’s quite famously known as Mama Rose though in the context of the show. Oh well.. it’s still wonderful to hear JR talking about her career

The character is never referred to as Mama Rose in the text, only ever Madame Rose.

The character is never referred to as Mama Rose in the text, only ever Madame Rose. That's what I've always thought! No one in the show calls her Mama Rose (which sounds more like a supermarket Italian food brand to me). She's Momma or Rose or Madame Rose. The Mama Rose thing is a name given by fans. It isn't in the show is it?

Just noticed that Electra is being played by Aiesha Naomi Pease who was Cleves in the Six Tour for a total of… six performances. Left for “personal reasons”. Bit of digging suggests it’s not all sunshine and lollipops backstage at Six.

Fabulous production of Gypsy at the gorgeous Buxton Opera House yesterday afternoon. Joanna Riding owned the part of Mama Rose but couldn't fault any of the cast or any aspect of the whole production. Hope it goes on to tour or a London transfer, definitely good enough.
Well worth my 12 hours travelling by train and bus (including a very scenic route 65 bus ride from Sheffield to Buxton and back to Chesterfield).
Highly recommended.

I wondered if the production values might be a bit low seeing as it’s only been a four or five show run, were they ok?

Better than ok, nothing elaborate or spectacular and not West End standard but perfectly adequate and some great costumes.

That's enough of a journey that you could have been Tulsa traveling to your next gig with Dainty June and all of those strapping newsboys. Extra. Extra. Read all about it.

I was originally booked in the Upper Circle but because my knee has been rather bad recently, managed to get a swap for the same price and ended right on the stalls front row, next to the steps where Mama Rose bursts through the auditorium and gets on to the stage. Joanna was a tour-de-force all the time she was on stage. I loved the whole piece, and won't forget how Joanna's whole body was shaking as she sang the final note of Everythng's Coming Up Roses at the End of Act One.

Where to start with Gypsy at Buxton Opera House…
Joanna Riding was every inch the stagey mum. Jazz hands aplenty, this Mama Rose loves the spotlight and takes every opportunity to be in it. Very self-aware, she is always peering into mirrors. About 7 years ago, I was fortunate to see Imelda Staunton as Mama Rose and I think Imelda captured Mama’s desperation and descent into madness a bit more prominently than Joanna but Jo gave an extremely heartfelt and powerful performance too. Also, at first I was surprised by Jo as I knew she wasn’t using her voice to its full potential, but she was saving it; my goodness was she saving it for Rose’s Turn. In that eleven o’clock number, she perfectly showed Mama’s fantasy to be a world famous Burlesque Queen like her daughter, flashing her garters, before finally coming back to reality with a bang.
Monique Young, as Louise, has what I consider one of the most complex characters in musical theatre. Monique captured Louise’s childhood innocence and shyness so well, yet also stole the limelight in jaw-dropping Burlesque scenes as the confident superstar Gypsy Rose Lee.
It was such a joy to see David Leonard as Herbie, as he was my favourite Miss Trunchbull from Matilda the musical. He’s a great character actor and brought an Emelius Browne-esque (from Bedknobs) quality to Herbie. This, I felt, made Herbie into a fully formed character and I felt like it was a definitive performance.
The same with Tiffany Graves as Burlesque dancer Tesse Tura. Tiffany is only onstage for a couple of scenes but it felt like a lot longer because she made the most of every moment. She put on a hilarious voice and the way she said lines like “wait till you’ve refined it” were bang on the money.
Other standouts include Rebecca Lisewski in her roles as Burlesque dancer Mazeppa and a disgruntled theatre employee; plus Liam Dean who tap danced up a storm as Tulsa.
The scenery and props were not quite West End standard but considering the show was only performed around 8 times in total that wouldn’t have made sense financially. However, the show did boast a large orchestra who played the score so well.
All in all, a fabulous day seeing a fabulous production of a fabulous musical in an quiet little spa town in Derbyshire.

I don’t entirely agree after seeing it on Sunday in a rainswept Buxton. I’ve seen Joanna Riding in several shows now and despite all of the hype we get for here on this forum and the continual dream casting her in absolutely everything I’m always left a bit underwhelmed. I think she’s good, but I don’t think she’s great. I don’t think there’s any “welly” behind her and it’s all so underpowered like she’s belting in her head but the mic is turned down low or something. I’ve seen her in Calendar Girls, Carousel and this (that I know of) and it’s always left me wanting. And.. hold on to your hairdo’s… Ria Jones’ Rose at the Exchange was better both in voice and in acting and Imelda was several levels up on both of them. That’s not to say I didn’t enjoy her. I did. Moving on to David Leonard, I didn’t buy his Herbie at all. The demeanour was all wrong. Gawky and awkward. I thought he stuck out like a sore thumb and actually wondered if an understudy was on. Hannah Everest was fab, the three strippers were fantastic but suffered from some odd directorial choices which didn’t milk the audience applause as much as it could. This happened again in Louise’s strip montage where due to the direction the audience was left unsure about when to applaud and some awkward silences. Very odd. Sets were basic as expected but some nice moments in Rose’s Turn. There were only two Hollywood Blondes, they went for a bigger male ensemble no doubt because of the newsboys tap number.
I’m going for ⭐️⭐️⭐️ . Nice try but nowt special.

I like the idea of only two Hollywood blondes. Im sure its due to cost but to me it's symbolising that Rose is really struggling
