This new musical has been playing in Northampton, ends there on Saturday but so deserves a future life. I saw it yesterday afternoon and was totally blown away. My fave show so far this year.
It's bawdy, very funny though dark and shocking in parts and ending, packed with catchy musical numbers, and all performed by a cast of 8 talented actor-musicians, most of whom play multiple characters. Debbie Chazen is exceptional in two key roles.
Most definitely not for children or the easily offended. Forget F-bombs, there are more of the C-variety here, the sex references are very explicit but as far as I could tell from the front row the mostly-mature audience yesterday lapped it up with an instant and total standing ovation at the end. The well-constructed story is set in a period of time 250 years ago when gin was more the drink of the masses than beer or fresh water !
There are plenty of reviews online, all four and five stars, which are worth a read.
Highly recommended.
