In the old days Broadway shows used to start at 8:30, so used to typically finish after eleven, so the second to last number, was a big song, to wake the audience up before they went home (Doesn't say much for your musical though, if you had to wake the audience up). This song was know as the 11 o'cloak.
What got me thinking of this was seeing Guys and Dolls in the week and this has one of the best 11 o'cloak numbers - 'Sit Down, Your Rocking The Boat'.
Other great examples I can think of are;
Roses Turn - Gypsy
Memphis Lives In Me - Memphis
If Mountains Were Easy To Climb - Mrs Henderson Presents

Does "For Good" from Wicked count? Love that tune. I think it does, even though I personally think that No Good Deed is the better 11 o'clock number. |

I never knew that about the timing - I assumed 11 o'clock referred to the 12 points on a clock and 11 o'clock being almost at the end of the cycle (and hence the song placed almost at the end of the show, but not the finale - which would of course be 12 o'clock!)

If the 11 o'clock number is supposed to the thing that wakes you up during a show then the best one must be when the person next you wants to get past to go to the toilet during the first act of Charlie....
