Did anyone catch The art mysteries on BBC4 last night, linking the three Seurat paintings, Les Poseuses, The bathers, and La Grande jatte - the critic had a theory that they were all linked by The Judgement of Paris (both the character and the city), and it certainly seemed plausible, though there were a million questions I wanted to ask and holes I wanted to pick - but a whole programme about our beloved painting and not a mention of Sondheim. Interesting that the much discussed, in the musical, factories are so prevalent. Definitely worth watching and it will lead to much discussion....and like the musical, it will make you look at the painting afresh.

I did watch this. I came across it by chance and found it fascinating.
There were some things I knew; that The Bathers were looking across to Le Grande Jatte but I was unaware of the link to Les Poseuses.
I do understand that very little is known about Seurat as a person, but at least he gave a little insight into the man. Also the origins of the dots and pointillism.
Fascinating stuff.
