Can't find a thread about this, so starting one. I am going to see this play in March, was wondering if anyone has already been and any comments?

Am very interested but if I do make the trip to Stratford, it'll have to be closer to the end of the run when the weather and daylight should be better. The writer was interviewed on R 4's Front Row on - I think - Monday evening this week. Listening, I learned something shocking which she also discovered when researching this play. Thanks, interesting. I've taken a risk getting a ticket "blind" for this one but having never been to Stratford before i wanted to match the sightseeing with a trip to the theatre. Looks like it will be a good one to see, from these reviews.

Would anyone know the running time for this. Booked the train well in advance, 1705 from Stratford and wondering if I was going to make it? It’s always the same, when I book a later train the play is only 1.5 hours and I have hours to kill! Thanks in advance.

The RSC website says 3 hours including interval, with a start time for matinees of 13.30 |

My train back to B’ham was 17.03 and I had plenty of time to spare, I couldn’t have caught an earlier train however. As for the play I recommend it. Brought out lots of things about the British slave trade I hadn’t known about, especially how the slaves weren’t really free even after they’d been “freed”. Very good performance by Richard Clothier as Alexander Boyd. I had a seat on the side of the first circle for £16. Excellent value for money. |

Relished this at yesterday's matinee: long but largely gripping, especially the first act & the acting, music & production generally were excellent. Not flawless & the political machinations in the second act, necessary as they were even for an edited version of the background, slowed the pace somewhat but it was well worth seeing & making the trip to Stratford. I also particularly enjoy seeing & supporting work by a new writer & on this basis would look out eagerly for anything more by Juliet Gilkes Romero. A huge topic, but she tackled it heroically. Plus some impressive performances from actors whose names were new to me: David Birrell & Richard Clothier.
