When the LNER multi-weekend strikes were called off, I booked a ticket to Come From Away in Edinburgh yesterday afternoon. It was only when I double-checked the train times on Friday evening that I realised there were line works, and the usual 2-hour straight through journey was taking 4 hours either including a bus replacement or going a big diversionary route with changes. So I couldn't make it work in a day trip, and so lost the price of my theatre ticket. And it turned out to have been an extra-good show to have seen, with some swings in roles I hadn't see before.
It was my own fault for not checking the train times sooner, I've been so focussed on avoiding the strikes for the last couple of years that I forgot about line works.

Rozzi Rainbow I was almost bitten in the same way. Months ago I wanted to go up to Leeds in November to see a matinee, then the LNER train strikes were announced so I thought I couldn't, then when they were cancelled I thought I could after all. However fortunately I did check the trains before booking the theatre & found the trains would be screwed. In fact they must be going to be extremely screwed that weekend because train tickets weren't available to purchase. I haven't been able to forget engineering as for the last year my trips to London have been incessantly interfered with by engineering works just south of Cambridge & there's no sign of it ending.

Currently on the usual two carriage train to Leeds. If I had my way, there would be no single sex groups of more than three, strictly no fancy dress and no alcohol...other than real ale. 😡

Shout out to my fellow non-Londoner Southerners who can only realistically do weekend matinees in the West End, otherwise you get home at 2am and want to die 👍
Especially when you have Londoner friends who can decide to check for cheap day tickets at your favourite shows while you have to plan weeks in advance

Cosplayers going to comic con are usually fine (given that they're usually introverted nerds) As a young woman, there’s a very particular terror in being in a carriage at night with a bunch of boozed up lads out for the night. All you can do is keep your head down and hope they keep to themselves…

On my way to Stratford East theatre this morning and all the trains I used had Cosplay folk on them. I saw Harry Potter, Deadpool, Harley Quinn on my travels. It certainly made what would of been a dull train ride a lot more fun!

TFL has announced strikes on the underground from November 3rd until November 12.
We've been caught into it, we bought train tickets a few weeks ago for November 7 to see a matinee, and it would just be hit/miss getting to the theater on time, and I can't deal with all that stress, so we cut our losses for 1 train ticket (luckily "only" 13£) and we bought another single ticket which gets us to London 3 hours before show time.

Tried booking a train ticket with Avanti. Wouldn’t let me book the train I wanted as apparently seat reservations are now mandatory (never used to be) and there were none available.
Had to go for the train before which let me book. This one hasn’t reserved a seat as “reservations are not available.”
Honestly, if I live to 100 I will still never understand the many rules and exceptions in this ridiculously convoluted system.

There is no logic to the system in most cases. I avoid LNER and Avanti as much as possible. I'm going to Manchester in December for a weekday matinee of Spend Spend Spend at the Royal Exchange.. Direct Avanti train Euston to Manchester advance fare without railcard booked now costs between £32 and £42. Splitting into two journeys Euston to Crewe and Crewe to Manchester costs just over £15 although the journey time is extended by over an hour. With my senior railcard I've booked that longer journey on two trains leaving Euston at 9.46 totalling just over £10 to Manchester arriving 13.20. Returning Manchester to Euston would be same fares and similar journey times. The difference between National Rail prices and National Express coaches is even greater. I have to use National Express to get from my home town to London Victoria in the morning at a reasonable cost - just £3.80 booked now with coachcard discount. It's £24 on the train as the senior railcard is not valid before 9am in SE England. I then walk, bus or tube to Euston. I've chosen to return from Manchester to London Victoria direct on the 17.45 coach for just £5.90, Takes up to twice as long of course but a huge saving over train fares. Total cost of my trip is around £25. I could get it down below £20 by doing the whole trip by coach but the times don't work out as the 14.10 scheduled arrival in Manchester is too tight for a 14.30 curtain up. By car, fuel alone for 500 miles would be about three times the cost.

There are some dark forces at work at the moment working against me with train travel to theatre shows -
1. Playing Nancy - Left Birmingham New Street at 6pm on a Saturday a few weeks ago and due to an incident on the line just outside Stafford the whole line between Liverpool and Birmingham was shut. We got as far an Penkridge which is a very small station just outside Stafford and ended up getting an Uber with a few other folk up to Liverpool and then I had to a bus back to my house. I finally got back into my house at 12.30am Sunday morning!
2. Engineering works in the Wembley Area meant a few sight seeing tour of North London prior to my watch of Starlight Express.
3. On Saturday, due to some idiot trespassing on the rail network just outside of Manchester Piccadilly, the station was forced to shut the lines in and out of the station. Thankfully I managed to get home after an hour delay.

Thankfully I managed to get home after an hour delay. I was caught up in 3 as well. We saw Kin at Home, followed by Small Things Like These. Luckily, I checked the live train status as soon as the film finished to see everything was cancelled bar one train going to Southport, which we caught with seconds to spare. En route, loads of us searching for alternative routes to get us to Preston and north, which we managed via Bolton and Wigan. Luckily a train from Liverpool to Preston and Blackpool via Wigan was running late so total delay was about 45 minutes. If we’d left it even one minute later checking train status, we’d have been stranded for hours...

I don't find the banter of drunken people (male or female) amusing. I find it obnoxious most of the time, and even when you try to keep yourself to yourself, there's always somebody who tries to involve you in some way. EDIT: In another life, I'm probably "Nick" from 'Come From Away'...

I went to Elephant and Castle to see Fly more than you fall last Saturday so took the train from Reading to Waterloo instead of the usual Paddington. Big mistake. It stopped in Twickenham and there was a game on . England v New Zealand. The trains were mobbed of course and rugby fans are quite well behaved at 10 am. Not so much at 7pm though. Unfortunately I was verbally abused by several groups of drunken men travelling back. I was travelling alone. At one point a very well dressed woman who had been to the races in Ascot tried to intervene to stop it but she got jeered at for her troubles.
I wonder what the wives and girlfriends of these charming men would think if they knew their loved ones behaved like this when they go with their mates to the rugby.

I wondered if anyone has tried texting the BTP number when something like the Twickenham incident happens? I’ve not dobe thst, but sometimes wished I had. I’m not sure how (or if) they respond to texts.

I’m not sure how (or if) they respond to texts. I did once and was called back almost immediately for more information but that was about something I saw outside the train (teenagers on a flat roof very close to the line.)I've also seen them board the train and it was held at a station with doors closed while they walked through and "escorted" someone off. I think if they called back from a text about harassment they would ask carefully worded questions so that the caller could just answer yes or no.

I admit I didn’t think of calling or texting the BTP. I’m going to remember that if it happens again, thank you.
