How exciting.
I just hope that they can pull this off. Gold directed the musical beautifully but theatre directors moving to film for the first time often ends badly. Likewise, Cerveris' performance in this role is one I still think about five years later and while I believe Gyllenhaal excels in musicals, I wonder if he can live up to it, as well as wondering if he's not too young for the part.
Overall, very happy that this is getting made though.

I love the musical although I'm wary of how the structure will translate to film since, as with Follies, it's very theatrical in having onlookers acting as narrator and in this show specifically there is a lot of overlap or quick transitions between time periods which I can see causing some difficulty on film.

I like the musical but I think it would struggle as a film. I think it'd work better as a straight adaptation as a mini series.

I agree the book would work better as a limited series, assuming it isn't the musical version. If it's the musical then I'd rather see it in the cinema.

Couldn't find an existing thread on this so I thought I'd create one.
As confirmed by Baz, Fun Home is to made into a film with Jake Gyllenhall in the Tony Award winning Fun Home.
What are peoples thoughts?
Personally, I'm thrilled!
Several reasons for this;
(Genuinely) I can't remember the last time that I saw musical where I was so moved. Possibly because I went in blind, with no knowledge of the storyline or the songs. When a song from the cast recording comes on my random playlist I have instead flashbacks.
The subplots involving the lead characters journey of self discovery, the relationship with her father and (subsequently) with her mother. Her father's secret. Also that the first half of the show is set in a funeral parlour.
It is a shame that after it's run at the Young Vic that it never successfully transferred to the West End.
Also, I am optimistic and subscribe to the theory that there is an audience for seeing modern day musicals on film and if they make a film of a musical, they will make another.

Some of the chatters at Broadway World have suggested ways that the film might incorporate graphic elements in interesting ways. Could make for an interesting hybrid of sorts.
