Enjoyed the first performance of this musical last night. It is on at The Other Palace in the smaller room downstairs.
Fairly full, but I was able to get a prime front row seat. A free programme too, which is always a bonus.
The musical is set in the 1920s, telling the story of plagiarism and what happens when ideas get stolen. That is also reflected in the musical score, performed by a band on two, which also borrows ideas and melodies from other popular songs.
Most of the story is told and sung by a female ensemble, with simple staging, usually involving moving chairs around the performance area. Jeremy Secomb is very strong vocally in the lead male role as you'd expect and easy to hear (I'd recommend sitting near the front as the singing is not amplified).
Maddy Banks, who was recently in Closer To Heaven, is excellent in the lead female role and on stage most of the time.
Ed Wade, only days removed from the closing of Fiddler on the Roof, does a great job in the third lead role, a bit smaller than the others. Only realised with the programme that it's the third show I've seen him in this year, with him also having been Scarecrow in The Wizard of Oz over the Christmas period.
Running time is 2 hours 5 minutes, with a shorter interval than usual. This went very well for a first performance, no stops, only minor wording slips and they were covered well and everyone was vocally good. I don't see this setting the world alight, but has potential and runs until 14 November.
