Directed by Kimberley Sykes - for people who have seen her work, is this safe in her hands? I have a tumultuous relationship with Shakespeare and hate it when directors are afraid of the text.
Never seen R&J and I love RPOAT so this could be ideal for me.

I think they confirmed these when they postponed 101 Dalmatians in January - timing it perfectly for the new roadmap dates before they’d even been revealed! |

For never was there a tale of more woe than this production’s telling of the story of Juliet and her Romeo. Running at just under 2hrs, Watching this at today’s matinee, it really is a mixed bag with some nice performances but as a whole I felt that the production didn’t really work for me and I really didn’t gain any new insights into the play.
The main issues for me are that the set used is just a load of scaffolding that gives the set something resembling a building site that really doesn’t evoke any sense of setting in the production as well as the relationship between the two star crossed lovers. As the play unfolded, I really got a sense that this was Juliet’s play mainly from the performance of Isabel Adomakoh Young whose line delivery managed to bring a depth to the character while her Romeo played by Joel Maccormack comes across as a bit of a man-child and at times appears to be in a different play altogether. Fundamentally, I just couldn’t invest anything in that relationship between the two characters as it unfolds to its tragic ending.
If the main relationship wasn’t a massive success for me, where this production did succeed was in the other characters. Calvin Clarke as Mercutio really brought some energy and fun to the role and after the character’s demise, the lack of energy on stage for me was sorely missed. Peter Hamilton Dyer as the Friar was excellent in providing that necessary bind between the titular characters.
With some nice sword fights thrown in and a bit of on stage fire at the end to warm me up, I just think the production as a whole left me wanting a bit more than what I saw. I don’t think it helped being sat on the grass bank at Gangway 1 where some on stage spot lights when at full power blinded both myself and the other patrons sat around me so it was difficult to see the cast at times.
Overall, I’d award this 3⭐️

Another casualty of COVID, this Friday’s performance which I was due to attend is cancelled due to the need of some of the cast to self isolate.
