I’m so tempted to see this. I’ve watched every episode of ER three times. I like a new play. I run a business that is helping address underpresentation in tech. But I just get a sense that all my buttons are going to be pressed and it’s going to be painful to watch. I like to have my opinions challenged, but everything points to a wasted opportunity.

Serious question, bit off topic - does anybody take Time Out and their reviews seriously? They have no credibility as it is pretty well known that they are paid for most of their reviews (I know this one is unlikely even though I've been informed that divided /negative reviews aren't necessarily indicative that they are free from paid influence). But generally I find their arts reviews (and restaurant reviews for that matter) uninformed, poorly written, sub-student union, NME/Vice reject drivel. Especially this Andrzej Lukowski guy, who I can't read without cringing. He also seems to have a bit of a race fetish. |

I loved this. I found it thought provoking, funny and particularly well acted by Alex Kingston (what a treat to have her on stage in London). It read as pure satire to me, so I was rather surprised by some of the reviews.

First few minutes I thought I was going to hate this but it ended up being an interesting, thought-provoking play: a play of ideas delivered through a family drama. People who think they have the answers to all the universe's problems will hate this, those who believe its rather more nuanced than black and white may enjoy it. Not sure some of the contributors to the programme have actually seen the play.
Well acted but needed a little more variety in tempo and emphasis I thought.

They definitely don't do day seats as having been unable to book via the Todaytix offer (as I wasn't sure how soon I'd be able to attend post-op), I tried yesterday shortly before the matinee, when according to several websites there were still lots of tix unsold at the higher price levels. They turned me away without a blink so possibly my loss but certainly theirs in terms of revenue. I had a back-up plan so went to see something else; I'd still like to see this but not at rack rates.

Quite a long run though so it will be interesting to see if the day seat/offer situation changes. By which time, however, some of us may have lost interest or made other plans...

Indeed, @theatremonkey, as we all want theatre in general to thrive and good work to do well, but the attitude of the box office in this case seems shockingly cavalier. There are polite ways of turning people down but you'd expect staff to show some interest and make an effort to achieve a sale. Potential customers who've taken the trouble to turn up in person are obviously pretty serious.

Alex Kingston was fantastic, and Ben Edelman gives such a physical and intense speech the audience just don’t know how to react to it.
So glad I caught this, easily one of my top plays so far this year.

Absolutely fine. Not as bad as it was for Apologia as the stage was lower. I’d avoid seats 1/2 as there’s a large table in front of these throughout. I was in 5 and it was great.

Although it's fairly redundant recommending this as it closes this week, I only managed to get to see it on Tuesday. My first trip had to be abandoned due to a dog related need (only thing more important than theatre)
I thought this was excellent, truly skewering people who often make the pursuit of (real) equality more difficult with their well meaning but often damaging ideas. The 1 star review from Time Out makes perfect sense as they are a shining example of the idiocy the play goes for. Having no POC on stage is absolutely perfect in light of what the play is saying and also uses as a plot point with the references to the former school newspaper editor. I can understand why some people feel uncomfortable as the play is a bit polemical which can turn people off; the same flaw as the characters really.
Very good performances from the whole cast especially Alex Kingston who never leaves the stage. There were some scattered seats about so if you have yet to see this I would definitely say take a chance. If nothing else it provides food for thought.

Hmmm. Wish I could be more enthusiastic. I came away thinking any parent who has negotiated the London education system in the past 20 years knows more about the myriad contradictions, dilemmas, hypocrisy, and moral duplicity of trying to do the best for your children while supporting the principles of state education .. than does an affluent New Yorker (this is on a transfer). London is a lot more complicated than this. Even the shape - the son embracing and mirroring back to his parents their apparent social values felt too inevitable and almost clumsy.

Strange objection above since it misrepresents Charlie's dilemma. I've seen this play three times now (including once in NYC) and can't recommend it highly enough: it's about a lot more than getting into an Ivy League college -- the fault lines in a marriage and a friendship, as well, for starters. Don't miss it.
