I'm not likely to see this as I have had a surfeit of Dame Courage, but this does look a very interesting production, and I was at the theatre today, thrilled that the Exchange have emerged from their visually brutalist period of a couple of years back. I'm certainly not saying that we go back to the unnecessarily opulent period dramas and all the ornate costumes that started it all, but many recent productions such as Persuasion and Streetcar were theatrically ugly and aggressively stark - maybe for economic reasons. Sometimes that space does work when it is bare, but i'm glad to see that recent productions have had some exciting visuals as well as interesting production ideas..

Visually this production was great. Courage's 'cart' degrades through the production from a very detailed vehicle, full of wares down to a mere steel frame with plastic tarpaulin making walls - echoing the journey Courage herself goes through. Theres a very subtle nod to the current political situation we're in reflected in the material and a series of illuminated stars around the circumference of the revolve. Neon lighting and an abundance of specials in Courage's cart but not to a distracting level. What let it down for me was the sound design. Newly composed songs didn't reflect the tension or imposed futuristic period of the piece. The songs that were used were lathered in reverb and as such made it hard to make out the lyrics and thus tie them to the piece. Stellar cast, but not my favourite RE production to date.

Do you think it was the same physical revolve as they used for The Producers?

Do you think it was the same physical revolve as they used for The Producers? Yes, that was my initial suspicion. The stage also has stars with lights in in very similar positions to sub-stage lighting on The Producers. Would make sense, financially, to re-use as much across a season as possible.
